Then of course in a week or so the UK gets high winds and rain.
Looking forward to it, it should bring up some swell over here. Though I hope it passes before the Iron Man

I'm really beginning to get bummed out about Irene.
I've rented a beach house on the northern Outer Banks for the annual family vacation, starting this Saturday.

365 days fricken' days to choose from and stupid Irene has to show up on my first day on the stupid beach. Stupid weather. I hate stupid weather.

I dated a girl named Irene in high school. She was stupid, too. If this is her payback, then I probably deserve it. But my kids don't. Stupid Irene.

Contrail Persistance and growth
Many chemtrail theorists claim that contrails do not spread out, but
chemtrails do. This is very untrue and shows a lack of knowledge of how
the upper atmosphere works. If the atmosphere is moist enough to hold a
contrail for an extended length, chances are that it will spread out to cover
sky, forming a layer of cloud known as cirrostratus.
If the atmosphere is
dry, then the contrail will fail to persist and growth will not occur or will be
limited. It should be mentioned that weather balloons are used to retrieve
data in the atmosphere, then that information is used against the
Appleman chart for forecasting purposes.
There.

I prefer disorganized over "cash first, then we might help!"
However the last time I was in an emergency, the first responders were from the aid organization where I am a member of. Spent my Karma points well

Yes, no wind in the eye. It is as if the a storm has just passed and wind/rain have stopped. It is quiet. Sometimes one can see the sun while in the eye!

Often the disorganized is the cause for too much cash expenditures. FEMA does not move until funding is approved on Capital Hill. This year FEMA was short on cash for forthcoming storms. Money was redirected from defense. Bur yes, it is all about dollars in the end.

The idea is correct. I have experienced one. Truth be told it is eerie.

The outer banks will be hit hard. I believe the evacuation has already begun for that area.

"Eerie" doesn't do do it justice. It's creepy. If you're "fortunate" enough to have the eye pass directly over you, you're standing in bright sunshine, the sky a sparkling blue over you head. Unfortunately, you're completely surrounded by towering dark grey walls of boiling, evil looking clouds shot through with rainbows. Okay, maybe "eerie" is a better description.

You really don't have a lot of time to appreciate the view, though, because Part 2 is bearing down on you ridiculously fast, and that's when the real fun starts. All morning you've been getting slammed by winds from the east (counterclockwise rotation). After the eye the winds come out of the west. So anything that was protected during Part 1 gets slammed in Part 2.

My wife and children have decided that we're still going to the Outer Banks, hurricane or no (we paid a lot of coin to rent the house). Probably Monday. I just hope the thing is still standing.

There is mandatory evacuation of the outer banks. You will not be able to go on the spit of land. Also, the projections put Irene right on top of the outer banks. No amount of money is worth the risk.

As for me, the storm will affect the Chesapeake Bay. My house is between Marley Creek and Furnace Creek on a peninsula. The creeks are part of the bay. Hurricane Isabel flooded homes one block from my home. I'm talking by 2-3 feet of water as the mass of water pushed up the bay. I will be checking my sump pump and battery back up tonight. I will probably purchase a new deep cycle marine battery. If my electricity is off for whatever reason the marine battery should cycle for 20 hours keeping the sump basin from flooding my basement. If the juice is not restored in that 20 hours my basement gets flooded.

The last time the region of Florida I live in got hit was in 2004 and we got two that year luckily they where both cat 2 by then but they both took down tons of trees and power lines blew off parts of roofs or tress feel on roofs. The worst part was all the trees that had fallen across roadways.I live down a long private dirt and gravel road the only option was for everyone who lived on the road was to grab chain saws axes we also had a few tractors to pull limbs we checked to be sure that no power lines where in any downed trees and they weren't.

One of the odd things was on the second day in the morning there was a noticeable gust of wind for about 30 seconds it actually blew doors open inside the house. In a wooded area across from my house this wind had blown down flat every tree for a 200 foot radius as if a bomb had air bursted so it must have been a very strong wind.

The power was out for over a week after each storm so many people learned to buy a generator after 2004.I am very glad that I was not in south Florida during Andrew back in 92 or 93 was it. I know people that went though that one and it was pretty bad.

Id stay away form that vacation rental if I was flatsixes hurricanes are no joke that close to the sea in particular one storm surge will wash that house away and you with it that is not worth your life course if they have done an evac of that area you will not be able to get out there anyway.Mother nature does not care if you spent alot of money on something.

Oh, I heartily agree! I said "the wife and children have decided," not me, not the authorities, and not Irene herself. But after 12,563 of marriage, I've learned not to argue about things that haven't happened yet.

Boy, oh boy, though AVG, you're going to have your hands full when that tidal surge pushes up the Chesapeake, not mention maybe 13-14 inches of rain. I like the idea of the marine battery for the sump pump. Smart idea.

When we were in Mayport for firefighting school a hurricane was forecast to arrive in the area. I think like two days before it was supposed to hit the fleet got underway and went to sea to weather the storm. We being on a USCG boat on the otherhand got underway and went further inland and moored starboard side to Jacksonville Landing granted liberty and hit the pubs.

It was a good time to be a puddle pirate
