Default New to the forum and to SHIII

Hi everyone! New member here. I've recently borrowed SH3 from a friend who recommended it and I have just got to say; I haven't had this much fun gaming in a long, long time. Why did I not play this any sooner?

Last night I was out on my fourth patrol ever, (apart from the naval academy) from Wilhelmshaven when I encountered my first convoy; it was south west of County Cork and coming right towards me. I submerged and lay doggo whilst the lead destroyer passed by. I popped up the periscope to check out the ships; it was dark and the Atlantic was like glass. And no other destroyers in sight or on the hydrophone! Perfect! I had 12 torpedoes still on board and I wasn't going to let this opportunity go to waste. As I was scanning the horizon for the biggest ships, I picked up a huge silhouette coming towards me out of the gloom. Holy Hindenburg, a Revenge class! Were they crazy sending this beast out with only one destroyer escorting? The BDU had warned me not to sink any capital ships, but to hell with them. How many chances like this was I going to get? ***8220;Not many***8221; I thought.

I got out my protractor and compass and got into position. Not sure how far down the Revenge's armour plating went, I set my four torpedoes to varying depths. The next few minutes waiting for it to come across my bow seemed like an hour. Finally it was in position; WOOSH! I sent all four forward torps at it. My heart pounded as they raced towards the battleship, every instinct screaming at me to dive but I just had to see them hit.

Tick tick tick tick BOOM tick tick tick BOOM tick tick tick BOOM tick tick tick tick tick... no fourth hit but... a chain of massive explosions! Maybe I hit the magazines? SHE'S GOING DOWN! The u-boot crew were shouting and dancing and so was I.

Back to reality, I suspect that nothing peeves the Royal Navy like sinking one of their battleships so I decided it was time to cheese it before the destroyer came about. Nose down at about 30m or so I heard the fourth torpedo hit. Some poor hapless freighter on the next line must have copped the last one! Sure enough, about 10 minutes later she went down. Not sure what type it was, possibly a coastal freighter as there were three of them on the last line, but I wasn't complaining! Even better, the destroyer crew must have assumed I was on the far side of the convoy and took off towards the sunk freighter. I got off scott free without so much as a ping!

When it was safe and the convoy was in the distance, I surfaced, determined to circle back and give them another taste of Teutonic brimstone. There was a whale factory ship toward the rear of the convoy that was just begging for an invite to Davey Jones' tea party. I gunned the engines and gave reloading detail like nobody's business. It was starting to get light but I felt I would still have enough time to get around to port and back in front of the convoy without being spotted.

Then, as I drew level with the convoy, the power went off.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The perils of not saving your game.

U-53 signing off.

Great introduction!

It sure sounds like you've got the SH3 bug, (hooked that is)...

Enjoy and welcome to the pack!

WELCOME ABOARD!

There is a lot to be learned, and you've come to the right place to learn it. You're in for years of fun, if you want it.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Yes there's alot to learn, but thanks to the excellent advice and info on this board, I believe I'm already prepared to switch to manual controls. Knowing trigonometry has helped me though, of course!

Thanks again!

Welcome to the forums!

I know the frustration of sinking one (or more) juicy target, only to have either the game crash or something else bad happens. I try to save often but over all, it's been very stable for me. As long as I observe the golden rules of saving the game...

Well I certainly do feel welcome! And so you know, I re-started that mission and found the exact same convoy in the exact same place (didn't realise that would happen, thought it was all randomised). I sank the Revenge again, only this time with manual targeting.

That's right.

Kudos on an auspicious beginning! If you want a real treat, try the GWX supermod for SH3. It transforms the game into something really amazing.

Welcome aboard!

Hey thanks for the tip SubConcious but I got the game from a friend who has moved on to SH5. He reccomended GWX so I found it as a torrent and downloaded it. That was before I discovered this site. The one I have is 3.0, that's the current one I believe?

Thanks anyway mate!
