Patrol 15 is over. 6 more allied ships and trying to crawl to their destination along the bottom for 25,312 tons. Again a lack of escorts is making my life easy. I ran into an armed trawler and found out the hard way the water was to rough for my deck gun but we got away. Made it back to Brest on 17 June 1941. I learned another good lesson. In rough water magnetic triggers are iffy because of the variation of ship levels with the waves. In rough water will be using impact.

Always check out what your watch crew is wearing.

If the weather state is within the parameters the game designates as "storm conditions" for your type boat, the watch crew will be in their oilskins instead of their regular clothes/uniforms.

The same parameters determine whether or not you can use your guns.

So if the crew on the bridge is dressed for bad weather, you will not be able to man the guns.

The only drawback is that the crew cannot change into their oilskins while on station - so if the weather was fair, but then gets bad, and you remained on the surface the whole time and did not rotate the watch crew after the weather got too rough, nobody will have changed their gear. Two ways to know for sure: dive and resurface, and everyone who goes to the bridge will be wearing the proper gear for the prevailing conditions. Or just take one guy off the bridge, move him below, and then put him (or somebody else) back up on the bridge again. If he's changed into oilskins while he was below, the weather's gotten too bad to use the guns.

I do this a lot because with Commander running the "no fatigue" option I don't rotate the bridge crew regularly. If it looks to me like the weather is getting rough, and particularly if I've got an enemy contact that I may be attacking soon, I will switch a guy down and back just to check on whether I can plan on using the guns or will have to rely on torpedoes only.

I once got a 'base changed' message right BEFORE starting a patrol (I had been tinkering with hydrophones). Which is, when you begin your mision.

Or simply use Jim's 'All Weather Guns' mod and defy the laws of physics...

And see your watch crew wear summer dress in a hurricane.

That mod is for GWX, I don't know if it works for the stock game. Possibly, but it overwrites all the uboat .cfg files in the data\Submarine folder. I don't know what else GWX may have changed in those files that might cause problems if you dropped the mod's GWX-based versions into a stock installation.

I can remember the question coming up before and I think Jim said he hadn't tested it with stock, but IIRC there were people who tried it with stock and it was okay. But I'm not sure and Jim or somebody else would have to confirm that.

If nothing else, the edits necessary to change the storm conditions parameters are not that difficult to do manually. You can get all weather guns that way or just up the wind speed and precip levels at which the guns can still be used. That's what I do, because as Steve has already noted if you want guns in all weather then your bridge crew will be out there with no raingear no matter how bad it gets. I tried it that way and just couldn't stand it, lol, it's bad enough that I leave them out there for an entire patrol. The least I can do is give them oilskins when the weather gets really bad.

Big babies... First it's oilskins then they'll want umbrellas, then a gazebo and then a portable heater. It's the thin edge of the wedge I tells ya!

Frau, thank you again for your tip. That is a great idea and quick which will save me a couple inbound rounds as I found out last patrol. I am sure that my career is a fluke so far as far as the escorts go. I did encounter what was called a "task force" once. I got close enough to see what they were and it was a "hunter killer" group of destroyers, 6 to be exact, and I bugged out quickly, but other than that I have yet to encounter a coffin, i mean ship with an escort in my 15 patrols. It is amazing to me that i have more than doubled my tonnage in 3 patrols with my VIIc than i had in 12 patrols in my IId. Well Frau's lessons at the officers mess are a HUGE reason for that of course.

About to head out on Patrol 16 out of Brest. Good hunting and better luck to all.

Another question about home bases. I tried docking for repairs and resupplies in a neutral base above Scotland, and a few others. And it only sends me back to my home base port I started at. Can you only do that in Spain, I've done before heaps of times before?

@ Jimbuna thanks for your download page, I'm sure from all of us. Its invaluable.

The subtle difference in Spain being the supply ship moored in the harbour

Oh now that's a good idea.

Two years playing and that never occurred to me.

Thanks Frau

You're not trying to load them from the external reserve straight into the tubes are you?

You have to drag them to your internal reserve first, them wait an hour whilst this is carried out, then you can load your tubes.

If you are trying this and it's still not working then I'm not sure what the problem is.
