That is exactly what they were designed for... you don't want them to hit the ship, you want them to pass directly below it but still within its electromagnetic field (which is what triggers the fuse). Best case scenario is that it goes off under the keel and just guts the ship from the bottom up.

After 13 patrols the U-139 Type IID was officially retired. The captain, Scott Von Ainz with 10 ships sunk for 43,300 tons and 15 shot down enemy aircraft took possession of the keys for his new ride the Type VIIc U-75. Here is wishing him better luck in this boat.

You'll find you have a lot more options with the VIIC.

first cruise out with my U-75............ I have so many torpedoes I can't count that high after being in the IId for a year. First target an armed trawler, seas are rough so I actually torpedo it. 531 tons. next I find a nice merchant. 2 eels out both hit, 3156 tons. a Corvette comes to assist and I have my stern tube ready...... out goes the fish, it hit and bounces off downward angle, hit the angle at the bottom. I get depth charged take minor damage and sneak away. Find a 6000 ton merchant, look it up in the book, draft 7.3 m, set for 9m. Two fish away both hit beautifully, ship breaks in 2 and i have my first 10,000 ton patrol........about to say "Hell Yeahhhhhhhh" instead out comes "Hellllllllllllllll NOOOOOOOOOOO".........CTD. oh my lord.........SH3 is very buggy with windows 7, but why in the holy f$^k did you CTD now? How bad can my luck be. I am amazed that I haven't died in the game yet. I am waiting to be like the movie and torpedo a damn truck. (operation petticoat reference) It is 128am here in Kabul, I am going to bed...................damn game.

That's the thing with SH3, it'll take you to the heights and then drop you to the depths! Funny thing is, we keep coming back for more!

My first COMPLETED cruise in U-75 (patrol 14) and they made room for me at the big table at the officers club. 7 merchants sunk, 29,310 tons and a couple Hurricanes as well. Thanks to the lessons taught here I am doing much better. Frau, the magnetic trigger is incredible now that I know how to use them. Find the draft, add 1.5 meter. I got a 6400 ton tanker with 2 torpedoes today. If i would have had patience it might have sunk with 1, but I dont like sitting around England for extended periods, the planes are getting better and more numerous.

14 Patrols, 72,200 tons. One thing that has really surprised me is that I have only been depth charged a couple times, and nothing life threatening. Patrol 14 saw not one escort present at AN84. Plenty of planes though. I have an observation though. You can't use deck or flak gun in rough seas, i understand that. But if my flak gun is on the bridge and not the main deck, it should be able to be used. Not a complaint, just an observation.

Thanks to the incredible community. It is amazing to see a forum with no flaming that is game related.

Is there a mod for faster reloading of the deck gun? Being part of the military for so many years, even I know it doesnt take that long to load a gun like that.

Well, the closest the munitions for that deck gun can be stored even during us is in the control room, which means there's 3 ladders to carry each shell up. I figured that probably has something to do with the slow reload times.

In theory, I suppose the flak gunner could be secured to the bridge in the same way the watchment are in rough weather, so it would be less dangerous for him than for men trying to use the deck gun. But the whole boat is still going to be pitching around like mad.

Someone else here will have the statistics handy (paging Sailor Steve), but naval gunnery is difficult enough in relatively calm seas, even from a much larger and theoretically more stable platform and while shooting at another ship. Planes are generally smaller, faster, and much trickier to hit even in the best conditions.

Quick question. If I am on patrol and I get a radio message "Base has changed to Brest" does that mean I go to Brest at the end of my patrol?

Wow, talk about immersion. I am north of Scapa Flow on Patrol 15, doing great 2 merchants for 10,000 with 2 torpedoes. I am heading to Brest with 25% diesel left and i find a 5000 ton merchant. I am setting up my run and I see a blue aircraft pop into the screen. so I pause to see what it is with f12. It is a condor doing a bombing run on my target. I watch this play out. Incredible is all i can say. The condor dropped 3 bombs bracketing the ship but no hits. the **** starts shooting back at it with AA rounds. The Condor bugged out. I have never seen that before. Of course now I will sink the ship, but was a great show.

Probably, yes. I always seemed to be in base when my flotilla transferred to France, so I don't recall ever getting a message about it.

But the flotillas operating out of German ports start transferring to French bases after the summer of 1940.

Yes, it does mean that. I've gotten a message like that once or twice before. Congrats on seeing the Condor attack! Wish I could see one like that!
