Default Next Realism step

So I've finally made my first successful escape, and weirdly enough escaping from from destroyers and hearing depth charges going off around me seems much more fun that actually sinking merchants (Yeah I know)

But the thing is , I had the stealth meter on.
So what I wanted to know is what to look out for without the stealth meter.
First of all, using the hydrophone is a big no, no matter how fun it is, second, not sure but it seems that you can tell if the destroyers see you by the pinging sound.
Other than that once I get the manual aiming under control I am on full realism...
Except my Captain's Name

No argument from me. I'm the guy who gets his jollies sailing in and out of the beautiful harbors.

The stealth meter only tells you how quiet you are, not whether they can actually hear you. Living without it is easy. The slower you go, the less noise you make. If you're worried about it, call for silent running. And manually set your speed for one knot. You can't get any quieter than that.

Why? Your soundman will tell you where they are and the crew will put it on the map. If you want to do the listening yourself, well, you're the captain, aren't you?

When you hear them pinging it only means they are looking. When they find you the pinging will increase and then you'll hear their propellors as they close in for the drop. At that point they're too close to hear you anymore and it's time to go to flank speed, turn hard and change your depth by twenty meters or so. The go straight and silent again. Of course if there are more than one the ones not dropping at the moment can still hear you, but that's the risk of being there in the first place.

Six years in and I still don't do that.

Yes but that's avoiding trouble, I like escaping it

Not even turning the engine off?

Mainly because I can't tell if they are moving away or closing (time for a headset)

Up to now I've always used my officer to make a solution.

Something along the line of Michael Galland, tried SH3 commander but it keeps giving errors, even with the gwx 3.0 patch for it.

Default play at 100%

all files are at true . I do that by going to the game settings (files) put all setting to true. Now I am at 100% real. when I hear or the hydrophone man hear ships . which way are they going. I lock on to one ship if I can with the hydrophone man. timing how long it takes that ship to go one degree, timing the ship and how long it takes for the ship to go one degree .the longer it takes for a ship to go one degree ,tells me its heading. My heading say is 0 the ship is at bearing 340 ,if it takes that ship 4 min too go one degree , that ship is on the port side. her heading is 160 .Each min less then 4 min. Have fun and play with it till you know what your timing the ship is and its heading is for you. PS . On the hydrophone one ship takes up degrees on the hydrophone. How much space it takes = how near it is to your sub.the more space in degrees it takes the nearer it is .This is my way.

I was just pointing out that we all have our little quirks. Yours is looking for trouble. Mine is sightseeing. My problem is I've seen more than enough war, and gaming it was fun for the first 30 years or so.

In real life they couldn't do that. Balancing a submarine underwater and maintaining it requires modern-day computer control. They had to keep moving.

Nor can I, which is why I never use them myself except for fun. That's his job.

That's what I do, and will continue to do. I like feeling like it's real, but there is no way I could pass the tests to be a real submarine officer. I can't do those calculations.

What kind of errors? As far as I'm concerned Commander is the single best thing that ever happened to SH3.

When is start up the game via Commander, it gives me an error that the game is already running.
Plus the some options I used aren't enabled, for instance the time compression is changed, but it didn't use the starting date I gave it.
