You are thinking of the USS Swordfish, she returned to Japan with only minor dent in her sail and a bent scope. A Japanese newspaper took photos of her entering port.

I have seen this and other videos of the project.

I was especially impressed at the care and respect of the burial at sea. Very classy.

Even in a cold war, militaries are still united in their code.

It is respectful but the shots from above and when they show the "casket" being lowered into the sea are eerie.
