Default Battleship (2012)

The H.D. theatrical trailer for the upcoming modern naval film, Battleship (2012) was just released recently. It shows an international naval fleet of ships from the United States, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, Peru, Canada, France, Colombia and Japan, partaking in a military training exercise in the Pacific Ocean (à la, RIMPAC), when they encounter a hostile extraterrestrial naval fleet of alien ships. Fierce ASUW and aerial combat ensues.

Actors and actresses in the film include Alexander Skarsgård (Generation Kill), Liam Neeson (Schindler's List and Taken) and the R&B singer, Rihanna.

Personally, I've been waiting for a big-budget modern naval action film for quite some time and while this may not be exactly what I expected, it looks amazing. The last few modern naval action films I can think of off the top of my head are Crimson Tide (1995), Behind Enemy Lines (2001), and Tears of the Sun (2003). While the story seems cliché and corny, I'm just glad the film is coming out soon and will definitely see it, for sure, mainly for its action sequences. So, give me your thoughts. What do you think of the film based on the trailer?

The release date is set for May of 2012. Links for the trailers are below.

P.S. Looks like the Iowa-class BBs didn't stay decommissioned in this film.

The story sub-plot with the sailor trying to hook up with the admiral's daughter is cliché to say the least and has been used countlessly in many other movies. However, this is not the movie one goes for the storyline, but rather the amazing action sequences, which I guarantee will be breathtaking, while the story probably will not be. I for one am going to be looking forward to Liam Neeson and Alexander Skarsgård's performances in this film, both are great actors.

The thought of a USN carrier strike group dueling it out with alien spaceships makes me giddy as a schoolgirl. The thought of those Arleigh Burke-class DDG-mounted Phalanx CIWS' unloading on those aliens. Oh, and did I mention before, Iowa-class BBs with sixteen-inch cannons?

It's only fitting that the movie opens up in warm and sunny Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Could you imagine how'd they'd get NAVSTA Norfolk's murky waters or rainy Bremerton, Washington to look nice in the film?

Word is that the current SECNAV, Ray Mabus, will make an apperance in the film as a USN CAPT in NWUs: http://militarytimes.com/blogs/scoop...commissioning/

Now, if only a big-budget modern naval video game were to be released. One can only wonder and wish...

Looks like a combo of Top Gun meets Officer and a Gentleman meets Independence Day meets Transformers.

Think I'll wait for the DVD...

I would like to see somebody do David Poyer's The Circle as a naval movie.

Writing a movie about a board game... when Red Storm Rising remains un-made.

*sigh*

That pretty much tells me everything I need to know to avoid it, then.

Maybe they can make a game based on the movie?

I don't think that would make a very good movie.
Mini-series? Yes. But a movie would be too short.

Wonder who is going to play the voice over for the whiny "You Sank My Battleship" kid? My vote's for Dan Castellaneta. (aka the voice of Homer Simpson)

This movie looks appalling and provides evidence that all the producers in Hollywood put together lack the creativity of a planaria worm.

Liam Neeson must be in bad need of work...

It'll be the very first modern naval action video game with a decent budget released in the last fifty years, so I'd most definitely buy it.

An H.B.O. mini-series, most definitely.

be that as it may he seems to make an excellent admiral character.

Use of The Black Keys in the trailer
CGI Battleship doing a full broadside
Alien, Transformer like ships
The sudden pan to an overhead view
The story is a bit overused but that just goes its a good story.

I read somewhere that the alien perspective will be there too,
so you can feel like the kid that orbited the game and watched both players.

Looking forward to the movie, even it is more an action one.

Sadly, you hardly see any (modern) navy-related movie these days - with a good story, like ice station zebra.

Now you're just being mean, getting my hopes up even higher.

Man, can you imagine HBO getting a hold of RSR for a mini-series like Band of Brothers? Holy CRAP that would be cool.
