Default 30 Things In Your House That Could Explode:

Surely theres nothing funny about an explosion in a home, but in a kid-science sort of way its fun to think about all the everyday things around you that can blow up. Without even counting obvious hazards, like fuel cans and leaky gas pipes, any household has at least 30 things that can go BOOM under the right conditions. In fact, you might even live with some whose temper can be described as ignitable or explosive; if so, you should certainly add this person to the list.

Note: While all of the items listed here are potentially explosive and therefore potentially hazardous, the explanations for why these things blow up are not comprehensive (not by a long shot). In other words, DO NOT use this list as a guide for how to prevent explosions.

1. Hot water heater
2. Food storage containers with spoiled food
3. Baked potatoes
4. Sausages
5. Light bulb
6. Beer bottle left in the freezer
7. Opening sealed containers in high altitudes
8. Aerosol cans in sunlight or heat
9. Pumpkins (and other thick-skinned vegetables)
10. Electrical explosion
11. Natural gas
12. Soda bottles
13. Wood stove
14. Non-oven-safe glass containers used in the oven or microwave
15. Boilers
16. Portable propane tank (for barbecue grill)
17. Flour
18. Botulism-tainted canned food
19. Carpenter ants
20. Water and hot oil
21. Espresso machines
22. Boiling salted water
23. Ice cubes dropped in hot liquid
24. Hot/cold glass filled with cold/hot liquid
25. Firewood
26. TV tube
27. Batteries
28. Septic tank
29. Trees
30. Mentos and Diet Coke

Hot water heater
Didn't Mythbusters basically bust this, as hot water heaters having so many safeguards to prevent this and even if all the safeguards failed it won't explode so much as turn into a rocket?

Edit: Reading the article states the same, still I wouldn't call it exploding.

Not to mention the two half spheres of uranium I keep on a shelf in my closet...

Lucky for me my kitchen is located on the first floor.

I'll go with George Carlin on this one: Why would anybody want to heat up hot water?

Then there are the poor innocents passed out on the kitchen floor who could easily be injured by beer bottle shrapnel.

I had a light bulb explode in my room when I was about 5...

And... A baked potato... You just made me hungry and mischievous at the same time... I think I'll mash a potato with explosives (just kidding)

You'll make everyone here paranoid not to touch anything in their homes for fear of explosion

The only thing that would bother me if it exploded would be the wife

Ok the thing that got me was the carpenter ants. From wiki:

Quote:
In at least nine Southeast Asian species of the Cylindricus complex, including Camponotus saundersi, workers feature greatly enlarged mandibular glands that run the entire length of the ant's body. They can release their contents suicidally, rupturing the ant's body and spraying toxic substance from the head, which gives these species the common name "exploding ants."[4][5][6] The ant has an enormously enlarged mandibular gland, many times the size of a normal ant, which produces the glue. The glue bursts out and entangles and immobilizes all nearby victims.[7][8]

The termite species Globitermes sulphureus has a similar defensive mechanism.[9]
