Default Is SH5 awful?

Hello there, shipmates. I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but I haven't found anything.

I have played SH3 & 4, both of which I very much enjoyed, but it was some time ago. I played SH4 1-2 years ago, and I loved it, but recently I tried installing SH3, but it didn't seem to work at all.

Now, I am interested in SH5, but all the reviews seem to agree on it being lousy. I realize, however, that these reviews were written when the game was new and with no regards to the mods that (hopefully) are out there today.

Now, more than a year later, I wonder what has happened. Is it patched and modded towards perfection? What mods are a must?

Is SH5, today, comparable to SH3 in terms of immersion and non-graphic realism?

The stock game is arcade, not a sim IMHO. But mods change everything. You can see for yourself in these videos.

As for "necessary mods", try sober's excellent recommendations and this thread. TheDarkWraith's NewUIs is a must for sure.

It is a pretty game, and the mods have made it much, much better than stock. For the price you can pick it up now it's worth a punt

And welcome aboard

Pretty much every other thread in the SH5 forum asks the same question. I suggest browsing a couple pages back and you'll see many many threads full comments about the state of the game.

Our search system must be awful since no one uses it

It's not the best. Googling with site:subsim.com added brings up better results. Although as mookiemookie said, just browsing back a page or two would've yielded enough results.

True it may not be good enough for searching for a precise thread, but for a grand question like this (literally asked hundreds if not thousands of times...) would yield at least enough results to answer a question without warranting a thread..

Very well. I confess. Let's end this charade. I did not look very far before creating this thread.

However, I am still struggling to find the answers to what made the initial SH5 so poor, and whether or not it is fixed to this date + does it only require patching for it to be compared to SH3, or is modding the answer?

No, its not awful im actually having a blast with patched stock version. I also liked sh3&4 and i kind of like the different approach devs took with sh5, meaning more involving campaign and somehow better connection with the crew & boat. Of course there are bad things here and there, but as i got it with 7.5e i really saw no reason to wait anymore.

I've made up my mind, I will go in to town and buy it tomorrow. Hopefully, I know what mods to acquire by then.

If you can wait a few days before getting your mits on it, get it from Amazon via the SUBSIM Store link and the site gets a chunk.

This game has an appeal of its own, but IMO it still has a ways to go.

Personnally i think some things that have been fixed in previous titles haven't been where they should be on the priority list. For example, last i played, battery recharge times were still borked. I explained howt to fix it in racerboy's (aka TDW) supermod thread, and has anyone here fixed it yet in SH5? I doubt it.

I'm giving the game time. Honestly, i wont try to play it again for another 8 to 12 months. Then i'll give it another go.

^ And the craziness of the convoys I've come across convoys in the north Atlantic - with 20 odd merchants nothing wrong with that right, but whats wrong is the number of escorts (20-30) last convoy I counted 22 escorts & destroyers protecting the convoy I even took screenshots if no one believes me. I thought how the hell am I going to get inside this convoy and attack when its got that many escorts protecting them! Oh wait this is SH5 should be no problem. And it wasn't a problem getting in attacking and then getting out.

But was there that many escorts protecting convoys?
