Default Ramming Speed!

I noticed if I sink either a junk or sampan by ramming they will show up on the nav map as being sunk, but I receive no credit unless I actually spent ordinance sinking it. What a gyp! It's much more fun to just ram them! Especially if they're shooting at me.

Throw a few rounds of 40MM at them before you ram. Should get credit.

Yep, just need to score some gun or torp damage first. You can do the same with ships. If US planes attack, you can often hit the ship with one shell and if it sinks you'll get credit.

Yes, the COMSUBPAC staff is very picky about these things.

That didn't work for me. Operation Ten-go, I intercepted the Yamato which was under attack by navy dive-bombers. She sustained numerous hits but was nowhere close to going down. Then, I hit her port side with 6 Mark-16s. A fantastic series of secondaries immediately followed before she sank but I got no credit.
I even saved and replayed it two more times with the same results, no credit. Sure, those hot-shot pilots probably grabbed all the headlines back in the States.

Works great on merchants, not so good on capital ships. I find you must get the killing blow on large ships to get credit.

why in God's name would you want to damage your boat? DG the hell out of these ****-kickers.... Save your boat for depths... And before you're doing so, why not practice torpedo attacks.. These can help alot when you're new to manual targetting. Just like O'kane in his shakedown in the Carribean, he practiced torpedo drills without firing on Mexican fisher boats...

So far, in the dozen or so times I've run over junks and sampans I've sustained zero hull damage. I'll try it on a fishing boat just to see what happens. I believe they're a little larger.

This can only be accounted as a huge game flaw. I am pretty sure that hitting a ship, even a small junk, would cause damage.

I have just installed GWX for my SH3 and the programmers did a wonderful thing: they removed the dial where you check how much damage your hull has sustained - as indeed I doubt a captain could assess if he had, say, "37% damage" or something.

Makes you go very careful when you have already sustained some hits. So ramming anything would be out of the question.

I must admit, I never thought about this much. It is difficult to imagine any skipper willingly ramming another vessel (at least anything bigger than a rowboat).

Yeah. And I think it is not only about structural integrity. There were so many delicate equipment, as the sonar listening heads, the deck gun and AA guns, antenas, periscope heads... all risking destruction if you risk ramming anything.

Fleet boats aren't built for running into things.

Capt. Fluckey rammed a trawler that refused to sink on his last war patrol.

No, I don't usually ram the sampans either. It's tricky to make sure you hit him straight, since they can jump forward and back so quickly, it's like they have a motor on board. Always better to just get in close and take him to school with your 40mm gun!

I forgot about him; did quite a few unorthodox things, didn't he? I think he got frustrated after the many dud torpedos he had.
