The market actually grew last year, like it does every year.
Quote:
Like mentioned, it doesn't even include sales on Steam. And that's just 1 article. Dozens more like it that were published over the last years.

Well as a wittering idiot
![]() Seriously though, there is a stong perception that the PC as games platform has gone/ is going down the pan, but if in realitly it isnt, why do so many feel that it is? Perhaps its just nosalgia kicking in? In my case maybe its just that most of my favorite PC game franchises have either gone sour or been killed of completely. ![]() |

Think it's really that: stuff like simulations and more "hardcore" titles being in decline. It's not strictly true, what with the stuff from Matrix and Paradox, and recently DCS and Rise of Flight, but in general the selection has decreased.
There was a thread recently that revealed Ubisoft's most selling titles, and it isn't something like Assassin's Creed, but the shovelware titles that most of us probably never even heard about (some Barbie game or some such). Not really something any of us would take note of. The market is fine, plenty of money going around, so as a platform PC is doing rather well. But at the same time a lot of (mainstream) titles suffer from being cross-platform; say what you will, but you simply can't do on a console what a PC can do, simply because current consoles have no more than 512MB of RAM, compared to 2-4GB in the average PC. So yeah, PC gaming is not dying, but it is (has been) definitely changing.

If, eventually, PC games do die we will not bother. Either because we will be very old to play anything but Tic Tac Toe or game platforms will be so good we will want to make the change.

Is this the future??.........Date: December 2011.
‘Reality Gaming group' (formerly ubisoft ) are pleased to announce the forthcoming release of Silent Hunter 6: The Cold War will be released as planned on March 6th 2012 ‘Reality Gaming Group’, who took over management of the Ubisoft company following it's demise following the DRM 'scandle' that blighted sales of major titles in 2010 and 2011, think that they have reached agreement with the original developers of the popular Silent Hunter series and intend to take it back to it's roots. The original Silent Hunter Series, which was a 'simmers' paradise for PC gamers was thrown into disarray with the release of the fifth game in the series ‘Battle of the Atlantic’ , which saw a switch in the game aiming it more at casual and Console users. A version was even to be released for the mobile phone. Tragedy struck when the PC gamers and hardcore simmers turned their backs on the products following its release with features that had been so stripped back that it had no feel and was basically built to be transported to the Consoles. The problem was further compounded when Ubisoft installed draconian DRM methods to prevent piracy which meant that to play the game the users had to be online at all times. The actual calculated numbers of pirated copies in use outnumbered genuine copies more than 2 to 1. With Ubisoft losing it’s cash flow and unable to port the game to the consoles and the DRM forcing people away from Ubisoft games in general the past twelve months was only to be expected. Reality are now confident that having got rid of those responsible for the Silent Hunter 5 and DRM fiasco, that the release of the new Silent Hunter Game will help to restore the fortunes of the company. The Reality Gaming Group, formerly the people behind the *** ‘Supermod’ for SH3, believe that their return to the fundamentals of the Silent Hunter ‘Sim’ will draw back the hardened PC gamers who were the front runners in all marketable games in the 1990’s and early 21st Century. They are also aiming to get new users from the console market who seem to resent being treated as ‘cash-cows’ when offered the likes of ‘Need For Speed No 10’ and ‘The Sims No 37’ as the best games available. The new Silent Hunter 6 ‘Sim’ will include all the ‘submarines’ from the early 1950’s through to the present day. There are 3 Campaign modes which will run through a scenario of a third World War and will take place over a 10 year period. The game is expected to be released on time with a new feature of an online mode, with servers able to handle a ‘global conflict’ with up to 28 players commanding state of the art Submarines with the most current technology, being available as a download in the not to distant future. Registration will require a once only internet connection for the Campaign mode and high speed internet for the Online Multiplayer mode. The marketing Director ‘*******’, (his online gaming profile!!) said in a statement..’Give the simmers what they want and you WILL have them for life and we intend to bring them back and keep them and the amount of content the game holds will negate any fears of massive piracy.’ These are considered welcoming words indeed by the ‘Simmers’ themselves and with pre-orders exceeding any other game, current or in the last 10 years, the future does indeed look rosy for the ‘Reality Gaming Group’. Maverick….The ‘Roving Reporter’. SILENT HUNTER 6 IS CONFIRMED |

Could have been funny. This is just nonsense though: "[...] the game aiming it more at casual and Console users."
It's the same game under the hood, with the added bonus of it accepting scripts. Technically it is superior to SH3 and SH4, it was just never finished, resulting in a rather poor experience. It's come a long way, but it's nowhere near as matured as for example SH3.

Really? Given the date on the 'article' is next December, I think there's some more wishful thinking going on.

Serious pc gamers won't ever fall for consoles...I know I won't. Frankly I hate them (the console it is) because they brought the pc gaming where it is today. In fact not them directly, but the kind of people who like and handle them. In my country there is a saying: "only stupid people who can't handle a pc go for a console" so in my country, with good reason, people who use consoles are saw beeing merely stupid. It's somehow a vicious circle here, prices rather high (when a game is out) make people go for piracy, piracy descurages pc games developers, and they go for consoles where people don't have much expectation, they just wanna play. Anything, no matter how bad or stupid or ugly it is. So as someone above pointed out, yes, the pc gaming is , slowly, a sinking ship...The good part in the process is that the water is not to ....deep so even sunked the ship will appear at the surface lol

Both PC and console games will fall to cloud gaming services like OnLive or Gaikai. No more piracy for devs but no console sales either, I forsee a battle between console OEMs and cloud gaming providers
![]() Even SH5 was supposed to also be able to run in a cloud gaming environment, don't know what happened to that though ...talk about death of modding... |

I think what you will see is a growing divide between junk-food style games and more realistic simulations. What would IMHO make a great deal of sense for this community is taking something like UDK or CryEngine3 and experimenting with subsim options. Far too much for one person to take on, you would need a pipeline of asset creators, scripters and coders. I may have a go myself... just to see what a type VII sub in DX11 tesselated water looks like. |
