Just for the sake of it,
If indeed that you have not seen a single ship in the English Channel, try going to one of thier ports, just for the curiosity...  I know this won't help solve anything, but if indeed that there are no ship, in theory, there should be no ships in port... Hope you solve this problem though Good luck & good hunting
