Default Silent Hunter 6

Hi all,

Just a thought, I picked up a second hand SH5 cheap and it runs very well on my XP system with a Nvidia graphics card, what happy bunny sid is. But I can't help thinking this project was never quite finished due to the fact that it does not run to 1945.

But looking forward to a new epoch of silent hunter 6, yes I do, and the new generation of superb graphic entertainment being developed, what game developer would you all choose to build your new Boat and why?

mine would be crytek, farcry was release in autum 2008 and it still amazes me with the quality of the graphics alone.

Actually FarCry was released in the spring of 2004, and yes it is the best shooter I have ever played. It's still freaking awesome! Crytek rocks, unfourtunately I don't think they will be messing with "low" interest simulations. We can always hope though.

Okay, well, disregarding the "there will be no Silent Hunter 6" talk - I gotta say, if there's one thing SH5 did not lack, it's eye candy. Is that where we really want developers to spend their effort? Focusing on that again would be just ensuring that we get another nice-looking but half-arsed game

In principle I agree. Graphics do play some role in games like Silent Hunters where most solutions are still based on visual confirmation, but we already have graphics good enough for that. I'm still happy with Silent Hunter 3 as far as graphics go. I play with 100% realism, which excludes the external camera. If not doing a surface attack, most of the convoy I ever see is a small, blurry image of a ship trough the periscope. After firing the torpedos and getting depth charged, I don't see anything else than my crew staring me with "this is all your fault, moron!" look on their faces.

I don't need fancy graphics for that. If given a choice, I would, for example, pick a crew that can do something else than stare at me anyday over the graphics. I haven't played Silent Hunter 5, but I understand this is actually one of the improvements in the game?

And I'm not going to even start ranting about Dangerous Waters, another game I love. The graphics are horrible. So what? I'm hunting another submarine, how do you expect me to visually see it anyway? For all I care, it can be a sprite image as long as it sinks. It's the process which finally ends in sinking, that counts.

My iphone games have better graphics than SH3.

SH3 took 10 years to become a good sim. And that with the help of countless official patches, help from devs and millions of mods. Im sure with SH5 we can be much more faster. The graphics are there, the rest is shaping up very fast.

SH3 was released in 2005.

That being said, I remember playing the stock. I remember laughing. A lot.

Certainly. My intention wasn't to turn this into yet another SH3 vs SH5 battle, just to say that subsims don't necessarily need fancy graphics, because the sense of vision is not always the most important of the senses used in sinking something.

Actually Sh3 was pretty well rounded and enjoyable out of the box. Of all the SH games it was proabably in the best overall state on release. (did i say best? - I meant least worst)
And It took about 3 years for it reach modding maturity.

I dont think SHV will be that much different unless more people jump on the modding bandwagon. While the advances have been slightly faster than SH3, there is still no where near the same number of modders that Sh3 had at the same time in its life, I think is might reflect of the popularity of both games - but in fairness SH3 came after a 4 year gap of no silent hunter at all, then suddenly we get three titles in a 5 year span.

This is the sad part. Because im sure that sh5 is the last one in the series and it need much more manpower in moding. But this will never happens as there is too much love/hate between the fans regarding the 2 version. Same as the sh3 fans will never get close to sh5, I will never get close again to sh3 no matter how good is now. I prefer to work like a mad and help improving sh5 in any way I just can.

And Im sure that one day we wil manage to bring sh5 much more further than any sh version was, even if we dont have the manpower and support that sh3 had. After just 1 year of release, sh5 is a very different game already.

Oh I was just talking in reflection, Hell I dont think I could ever go back to SH3 now, already done it to death..
For me now the future is SHV or nothing. I don't really understand divisions between fans of the same franchise. Its pretty unusual if you ask me.

...i have a feeling that there will be another Silent Hunter, its just it probably wont have 'Silent Hunter' as its name. but im sure there will be another kind of sub-sim that deals in the war from 39-45. maybe it will be built by the modders that have the know-how. this kind of thing is happening with Red Orchestra 2. Heroes of Stalingrad, i believe.

a disparate band of modders got together to build the game they wanted to play. it may not come from a big corporation like ubisoft or some one else, but a smaller home grown group. i can see from the mods i use for SH3 some of them are pure art work, unbeleivable detail - real care and attention and dedication.

so im sure there will be another sub - sim. it wont be all doom and gloom. and i whish the modders at SH5 all the best, coz i'll be getting it when i can upgrade my comp. and the internet connection thingy is finally dropped - if ever!!

Farcry was a good game but the best thing to come out of it was Farcry's editor if only all editors were this simple. I use to just spend hours creating new landscapes huge mountains with tracks and roads lots of greenery with well place monsters, then throw in a jeep, truck, hand glider enemy soldiers & spawn in and play.

If you think Farcry looked great go get a copy of Crysis. Same gameplay just better looking.
