How do you actually use the S-Geraet in game? I can't figure it out...

The S-Gerat (Special Apparatus for Active Sound Location) was essentially sonar. It transmitted sound pulses and timed the returning echo to detect underwater objects. Because it emitted sound pulses which also broadcasted the U-boats location, this device was not very popular. It could detect objects up to 4,000 meters away.

You can only use the S-Gerat ingame on a target you already have hydrophone contact with and it's designation, ie warship, merchant or unknown is shown in the notebook.
If you have that you can then use the sonar operators menu to determine the exact range to the target. Only really used with manual targetting and as allready mentioned, it'll reveal your position if theres a warship in the vicinity |

Or you can hit the button on the bottom left corner of the hydrophone dial. Your sonarman will yell at you for playing with it, but you can still hear the ping.

Anybody below the waterline, on any ship, can plainly hear it. More than once I've heard it while laying in my rack. Does SH3 penalize one for using it? |
