Forgot to mention, after you copy the 2nd track, you can use CTRL+M instead of CTRL+V to mix the track into the 1st track. Just select the part in the end of the 1st track you want to have the 2nd track to start fading in and press CTRL+M and ok (the default settings are ok most of the time). Gives a nice cross-fade effect.

Some good sound editors:
Cool edit pro Adobe Audition Sony vegas (look up the appropriate one) or get the Sony Vegas Suite. Sound forge I use sony vegas movie studio where I can also use it to just edit sound but its mainly a video maker. |

You forgot Wavelab, it cost me a bit but love it, I had Sony Sound Forge, was good but it didn't utilize VST plugins!
