RE historical correctness, I think that eventually on certain celebrations they hanged a flag there, but of course never as usual thing during patrol. I know in turn for sure that on Xmas they frequently had tree and lights

this placement seems, to me to me to be the directors choice. its seems like the director here, feels the need to make sure you know "these guys are the bad guys" (hense the swastika), in case you didnt notice they are in a uboat
