Well, to easily learn manual TDC all you really need in my opinion is to be able to see the TDC dials next to your periscope view. If you have this then you are good to go and anything else you get with a gui mod like scope wheels, fancy plotting tools, slide rules, and more useful periscope markings is just a bonus.

I'd suggest to just have some fun and start playing the game before you worry about chopping and changing mods. OLC/ACM is as good a start as any gui, and once you are familiar with the ins and outs of plotting and manual TDC then you'll have a clearer idea of what you'll want out of a gui mod if you feel like a change.
