Now that brings back one or two eerie memories from years ago.

What really concerns me is the ease with which people still appear to be able to get hold of these weapons.

It jsut denonstrates that firearms bans do not really work at geting guns away from those who want to obtain them. Personally i tould take me about an hour to obtain a fully automatic ak-74 with a few hundred rounds of ammo, most of that would invole just time it take for me to travel.
That being said though, the culture play more part in violent crime and what types of weapons are used, for example in Estonia we have a fairly high murder rate, but guns are rarely used, even though easily obtainable.

It does however go a long way to reducing the incidents of people getting their heads blown off over fender-benders, etc.

It does? Anything besides gut feelings to back up that statement?

IIRC there are a few differences between the AK and the T-56. Pressed barrel vs threaded for example but generally you are correct.

Actually it's a fairly specific and detailed Article (not just a list) on the causes of gun-deaths, which suggests to me that a lot fewer would happen if the things weren't just laying around, providing easy access in times of stress (which is kind of obvious).

But yes, that is just my oppinion, worth no more or less than your own.
