Today, dog gets loose, and I spend 4 hours chasing her over the neighborhood, missed another job interview. Just had to reschedule it, but it still doesn't look good.

Fuuuuuuuuuu
Ummmm, hate to pop your bubble but......

1. Who left the car door unlocked so "someone" could stick mail in it?

2. 4 hours to catch the dog? *coughBS*cough Let the damn dog go, go to the interview.

Hate to sound like an old man, but I am an old man, and call em as I see them. These sound more like the excuses of someone living in mom's basement who really doesn't want a job..... do you really think these excuses hold water? WHo are you trying to convince?

I don't think that's entirely necessary, MothBalls. Gargamel didn't say the jobs were particularly important to him or that he needed them to get out of mom's basement. All he said was that it was frustrating. I don't know how old he is but it is pretty callous to accuse him of malingering when we don't know the situation. Maybe his dog doesn't escape regularly. Maybe he loves the dog more than he wants an easily replaceable job at a gas station or whatever.

That said, I'm not sure where he lives that people stick mail in car doors. Also, I think he needs to train his dog better, if it is in fact his dog and he does care for it. A well-trained dog will never run away when called. A really well-trained dog won't try to "get out" because it has no desire to do so. It has been trained to understand that it has a limited "jurisdiction", so to speak. Not harshly-trained, mind you, just in case anyone gets the impression.

All posited scenarios aside, it is not our place to judge someone's nature on the basis of a rant about things that happened to them in the real world where, as I'm sure we are all aware, stuff happens.

Come to think of it, there isn't a thing in this world that makes me say or think:
"Ahhhh F.....".

There are things however that will make me utter one word responses out of disgust. The two most common ones are simply:

a.) "F _ _ _." or "F_ _ _!" (note: one is a statement, the other is an exclamation)
b.) "C_ _ _sucker!" (This one, almost always takes the form of an exclamation and rarely as a statement)

Both of these one word responses, usually happen when i'm commuting too and from work. Very rarely at other times. Excepting maybe if the power goes out at home. Then the appropriate response for me, is usually above mentioned item A in the form of a statement.

Yup, dog is usually chained up. She snapped a 3/8" steel rope today. I was going to replace it tomorrow anyways. I usually have to replace it every six months. German Shepard. And no, I didn't train her that well. She's very head strong and we failed to break that from her early. Our fault.

And I normally don't lock my car door at home. Haven't for 20 years. I just don't. But why somebody would stick it in the car door instead of the mailbox 15 feet away is beyond me.

I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't already seen it happen, amongst other things. German Shepherds (or Alsatian Shepherds for you British bastards who still think WW1 is going on) are my favourite breed, and I've seen them escape from all manner of tethers and enclosures.

Well, it's never too late to start training. German Shepherds are remarkably aptly-named in that, like Germans, they respond well to discipline, and like Shepherds, they exceed at guarding a specific target in a defined area. Remember that while training.

Not that I'm a dog whisperer or anything, but all dogs have a "pack" mentality. The key to training them correctly is making them realize that you are the leader of the "pack" and you are always the leader, even when you're away. The headstrong nature you mentioned is actually what makes German Shepherds so good for training in virtually any task, as they have an almost wolf-like adherence to the pack system. People say they are "smart", but in truth they are no smarter than any other dog. They are just easier to train if you keep the above in mind. Your problem, if I may venture a guess, is that she thinks she is the "pack leader" when you are away, or even the runner-up when you are around.

In the interests of not derailing this thread further, I'll say no more save that if you would like some helpful free tips on quickly training your Shepherd, I'll be happy to provide a few via PM.

Likewise, it is beyond me. One is liable to get shot for randomly or systematically opening other people's car doors in my area, but then again, I'm in Texas.

Ty you for the offer, USlCp, but since whe's got at best a year or so left (she's 12 now), it almost isn't worth it.

But onto a new gripe.

Time Warner Cable.

For the last 8 months I have complained that everytime the wind blows or a squirrel runs across the line on the pole, I lose my internet, and the TV goes all pixelated.

They have been to out to the pole 6+ times over that span, and still can't fix it.

Soon as I get some other things sorted out, I'm switching to ATT Uverse.

Kudos -- this is spot on.

I also agree that he needs to spend some time training with his dog. Remember: Every time you interact with your dog, one of you is training the other (think: What do you do if a dog drops a tennis ball in front of you? Throw it for them? They have you well-trained!). Heck, all you have to do to get the dog to come when called is to reward them when they do come. Could be giving them a dog treat, could be playing tug, heck, it could sometimes even be "Good boy. Now Go!" -- giving them the green light to run out away from you again (Premack principle, for behavior geeks). How you reward good behavior depends on the dog -- some like lamb treats most, some like playing tug more than treats, etc. You just have to know your dog.

Reading your next post on dog training, UnderseaLcpl ... you have some strange ideas on the subject. It really is simple behaviorism: Behavior that is reinforced will increase, and behavior that is punished will decrease. Saying "Oh, you have to Be The Pack Leader" seems silly -- when was the last time you confused your dog for another human? Do you really think your dog will confuse their humans for other dogs? Why do you think they'd relate to you as if you were a dog, too?

As for pack hierarchy ... the alpha of a social group eats first, and the lower ranking ones get the leftovers. When was the last time you had to beg your dog for leftovers?

Oof. Thread derail! Perhaps this topic is worth starting a new thread?

Nah, this type of thread usually rerails itself. People will jsut ignore the current conversation and post a new gripe. Then a convo starts about that and then that one get's ignored. It's just a nice little thread to complain about the crap that isn't worth a whole new thread.

@ elephantium

I can try to explain, and I'd be interested in discussing the topic should you wish to do so via PM.
