That's not a cool thing to say to someone, even if you believe it to be true.

In any case, you can find a teaching position in just about any area of the country and in any content area. However, you should be prepared to work as a per deim substitute for as long as two years. The money isn't so bad, but it is critical that you get yourself subbing in a district that you are interested in seeking contracted employment. The fact of life as an educator is that districts are always hiring, but rarely hire outside applicants outright.

Right. Actually the fact is that there's no shortage of teaching positions (in Canada, though, good luck getting into teaching at the school level - but at the college level, there's actually a deficit of instructors). But you should be prepared to put up with a tight situation at least for some time, and that can be difficult, especially for those who have families. Along with the fact that the system itself is full of unpleasant realities and relatively poor working environments. So in some cases, I can't blame people for choosing the forklift - but I'd be careful to emphasize that it is, indeed, still very much a choice and not a 'doom'.

Not as true as you might think for french schools. When I graduated my highschool and my principle heard that I wanted to end up teaching secondary school he told me to come back to our district quickly because there is a shortage of billigual teachers for secondary schools.

True :P

I just never considered the French system myself since, well, I don't have french.

Oh, and on an earlier point about McGill - I've looked into that, actually, it is a good school. However the only program I would've been compatible with would be in Education. Unfortunately the professors I would've been interested in working with were "full", i.e. they were not taking on more PhD students. Meanwhile here at Waterloo, a brilliant professor in my field seemed to be available...

...but because of our stupid, stupid department, she left a year after I got in. What a shame As you can imagine, that put me in a difficult position for quite a while.

University of Maryland College Park. Study was Criminal Justice. I had a splendid 4 years there and would do it all over again!

I stand by my statement. What I'm saying is, pick a markatable minor that will make you stand above the other SS teachers. All of the stuff Tak said is true (regarding subbing), but be prepared to find a good summer job. Make sure you do your research before you get into it. Last time I checked, math and science are in high demand. If you're open to it, become a kindergarten teacher, as there is a high demand for male kindergarten teachers.

Oh, and find out what other state's teaching requirements are, as they vary widely. BUT, watchout for districts offering really sweet deals to relocate to their district, you could get stuck in a really bad district/school.

LOL... History, actually.

I'm really in it for a degree less than for a teaching cert. And Home Depot doesn't let me drive their forklifts anymore, after that little panel truck incident that everybody overreacted about back in the day.

Well, first thing is, what's wrong with a chorus line of naked women??

And, if it's not been said enough before - brother, you are damned good at what you do.

I went to a little state university located in a Podunk town in Oklahoma. there never was anything to do so we often had to get creative.

I lived with my room mate, who was an air national guard mechanic and his girlfriend - an alcoholic nudist - in a low rent, little white house that has long since been demolished. the floors were either plywood or linoleum depending on which part of which room you were in and my closet door was a fish pattern shower curtain from dollar general.

to keep from getting dicks drawn all over my face at night i used to sit an empty beer bottle on top of my door knob in the hopes that if those bastards tried to sneak in after a long night of boozing it up the bottle would fall and wake me up.

in the house to the right lived an old woman who loved to call the cops on our parties even though we never were that loud but she was always just as sweet to us as could be. on the left lived a young red neck couple. he was a mechanic, she was a 20 something housewife... he was a lot like the way he talked, looked and sounded and he always had a coors in his hand. he was cool as hell.

Our cordless phone was renowned for picking up random cordless phone transmissions throughout the neighborhood. fun for hours. we used to listen for raunchy phone sex. occasionally we found some stuff you wouldn't believe.

The whole gang consisted of about 15 friends and we must have had a party 3 or 4 nights out of the week.

The local bar where anyone really would hang out was about 3 miles from where we lived, so we would put on our jackets and load all the pockets up with bottles or cans of beer - set off to walking and get a good buzz on the way.

before we left the bar, we would get one of our friends to hook us up with 3 or 4 bottles of beer a piece, unopened - so we could take them to go for the walk back home.

One night we went from house to house rearranging the Christmas lights to spell out profanities... and all the cute little wicker deer were placed in lewd sex positions.

another night - "party night" we didn't have enough money for booze so we all went out and purchased a bunch of bottled root beer and drove through one of the notorious police check points with all of our "open containers". that cop smelled everyone's breath and checked every bottle. we were clean and he was annoyed... we drove on.

the classes were mostly aviation related, and almost every day there was one or two training flights to be had.

going off to college is a great thing. I learned a lot there - and most of the important things i learned couldnt be found in the class room. I did a lot of growing up and really got my first taste of "freedom" as a young man out on his own.

it was a blast... I wouldnt trade those days for anything - except maybe for a degree in some other field of study LOL
