Default My First Hunt

Well guys, after all that struggling I put you through (haha),
I finally got what I wanted

I have GWX & Commander Installed and did my first Patrol.
Well,It took me a bit to ship out of beautiful Lorient France.
I was writing down & farmiliarizing (Spelling fail<) myself with the controls.
After a while I finally got out of there.
Not much action for a while. I was assigned to patrol BE22.
I managed to spot A british Merchant Heading Twords Cork, But i lost him.
I continued to chase him down at night and managed to find him and sink him at sunrise with the deck gun right off of the Irish Mainland,
I was HAPPY

Then I proceded to My Patrol Area. After those 24 hours,I was to return home. But I couldent help myself when a large convoy passed by Consisting of 3 cargos (possibly 4) and 1 destroyer. I was Surfaced, about to take her to periscope depth when I heard Arty hitting Aft. Took for down to 20 anyways. Soon as that beautiful death Machine Got close enough, Depths were in the water, we were at 110.
We sustained Minimum damage the first few times, easily repairable.
We were silent running about 2 knots east but he managed to pick us off everytime and inflict a little more damage. After a while We sustained Flooding, and sunk

I didnt expect to be a pro, But Im happy with 4707 Tonnage for a first Patrol. They crew was pretty resiliant to my commands which made me mad

Anyways, I am having some trouble with Commander, It seems like it only does half of what I tell it too. I have the Config Files for GWX and it works pretty fine but It only takes half of the things I tell it too!.
EX. I create a new profile with it, But it still asks me when to start? and even if I start the year I put down on commander, it will still give me a completly diffrent SUB. Am I doing it wrong?

Oh, One more thing also, I know this game has eternal loading screens but does anyone elses freeze like 3/4 of the way there, then like 5 minutes later it justs starts the game on its own. without even finishing the loading?..

Thanks Guys

Hey,

I run SH3 + GWX on my old lappy which isn't really built for games, I get long loading times that suddenly lurch to completion too, plus occasional ingame stuttering at time compressions over 256, but apart from that GWX runs fine and has not crashed on me yet.

When you pick your year, base and boat in SH3 Commander you also have to reselect the same options again in the game's menu screen. It will enable everything else it let's you play around with itself though.

Good luck on your next patrol!

edit: The optional mods that come with GWX are explained in the first (ish) section of the GWX manual. Right at the end of the GWX manual in the appendix section there are some tutorials on manual targeting, attacking convoys and evading ASW ships. It's a PDF located in the 'documentation' folder of your SH3 install. Make sure you you 'rollback' SH3 Commander if you choose to enable some of them.

Your only required to spend 24 hours in your assigned patrol zone. You dont have to return after that. Most of us won't return until we're out of eels. It's not uncommon to spend 60-70 days at sea.

And anyways, in GWX, the renown bonus for actually hitting your assigned zone has been removed. Some of us, myself included, have added it back in, to feel like we're actually following orders. But once the 24 hours is up, you cna go wherever you want, and that is usually into one of the high traffic areas that are marked on the included (GWX only, not stock, IIRC) map.

Historically, Skippers were court martialed or just reassigned for not shooting at anything (basically the ones that intentionally avoided contact with the enemy). So it's accurate to play till your out of fuel or ammo. And there's enough fuel in the GWX boats to sail to the US, spend a couple few weeks, and sail back.

If your having issues with SHC and the steam install, try UNchecking the auto rollback option. I think the delay caused by Steam forces SHC to ignore all it's own changes, but that's just a theory of mine.

And as I said in the other thread you have here somewhere, expect 10-20 minute load times, especially deep into a patrol. It's just that deep of a game. (or poorly written )

For who knows what reason, the game loads the entire SH3 "world" every time you load up... all the data for everything for the full duration of the war, instead of, say, just the stuff that's necessary for the current patrol or mission. That's my understanding of it, anyway. Thus the very long loading times. They will probably get even longer the more stuff you add. It can be a nail-biter when you're loading up for the first time right after adding a new mod, sometimes it will hang right there at the end and make you think it's gonna crash and then it doesn't.

OTOH maybe it's not a bad thing to have to get used to for a game where patience is such a virtue.

That first sinking... what a rush. Actually, the first sinking of any career is great.

Many players here have private "rules" that say they stay a week, 10 days or even longer on station. In real life, they wouldn't send you out just for a day. Especially when you have 50+ days of fuel. Myself, I stay out until I am down to 1-2 torpedoes and out of deck-gun ammo, usually 30-40 days.

You may have come across a really elite unit, very unforgiving. But always ask yourself "What am I doing wrong?" Were you as deep as you could go? Were you slow enough ("about" 2 knots is not good enough -- at 2.9 knots, which is "2 knots" in the game, you are making too much noise)?

Not a bad start!

I know that you dont have to gome back to port once your done patrolling.

Im having another problem with Commander. Whenever I try to edit my crew, I cannot click on anything. I click the medals qualificatons, everything. It wont even let me edit or randomize the names. It was working at first but now this is happening

Nice to see you're up and running! If you think that's a large convoy, you're in for some real treats Some convoys can consist of up to 30 ships or maybe even more.
As for the commander problem; I think (not completely sure) that you can only edit your crew when you're in harbor. So if you were trying to edit crew when you were at sea that might be the reason it isn't working. Can't think of anything else causing that problem right now.

Yep, crew management is only possible when you are docked at home base.

Trust me, you are not the first person to wonder the same thing, nor will you be the last. The learning curve is pretty steep.

No shame in sinking "only" 4700 GRT.
Generaly, the more realisticly you play, the lower the tonnage.

You may want to include boat number, boat type, and date, in your postings.
The date and type of boat your driving can have a huge effect on events, and tonnage.

Enjoy your game.

"Generally, the more realistic you play, the lower the tonnage" is debatable

No probably about it. The reason was that they had no idea that people were going to create more that 100 new merchant ships and all the incredible harbor details. I keep a stock SH3 install for testing things and occasionally I load it up just to remind myself that, yes, stock SH3 really does load in less than a minute.

Because they learned from their mistakes (some of them, anyway), SH4 fixes all that.
