5000 yrds or about 1 nautical mile. I think that's about right for the soundman. I can also hear the coming vessels well before I get a call out from the SO. It's why I go to the phones so much myself. I TC for 20 NM then then listen, back to TC for 20 then listen again. That way, (since I'm always zigging somewhat), we rarely miss any contacts that the SO would miss because we changed course. I have never gone into the files that far to see what the game settings actually are but it's natural to hear sounds before the SO calls out.
That's just my experiance.
