Kernel.dll Crash!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm getting so sick of this CTD from kernel.dll what is the problem?? My mods are The interiors, tomes sound pack and WAC 4.1, I have a consistant 30 FPS, and everything configured. I just re installed SH3, and patched and everything including the 4 gig one. I'm sick of doing this and I still get the stupid crash, what did others do to stop this I know I'm not the only one this has happened to!

My SH3 also had a lot of crashes at first. The kernell crash has something to do with lack of RAM memory IIRC. Installing the Lite Harbor Traffic mod did the trick for me. It made my whole game run smoother, not only when I'm near a port. I didn't think it would make that big of a difference but it did for me... I'm not saying that it will solve everything for you, but I recommend you try it

I totally understand what your going through, I had this problem a few weeks ago. Try cutting down the number of mods and expand your virtual memory or so if your PC is over 5 years like my one, try Game Booster v1.6 as suggested to me by Damo which will help to free up memory and it's free. I think it dose help but don't d/l v2.0 stick to v1.6 as said.

Thansk alot guys, I installed game booster, ran the gaming mode (shut down some services/processes) and installed the GWX Lite harbor traffic. All while in middle of patrol (hope it works), it shouldn't effect it to much I hope. I'll let you know if all goes well

Are you on XP 32bit OS? If so you'll need to edit your boot.ini to include a 3GB switch to get the most out of the 4GB patched .exe. You must also be using Service Pack 3 for XP.
I can run you through how to do it if this is the case but don't try and do it yourself as you could screw your Windows. I've done it in order to run the full MFM mod but whether I can strap the interiors on as well I haven't tried although it worked with the interiors without the MFM. There's just a limit as to how far you can push SH3 within the limits of a 32bit OS.

Reasons for getting CTD's are too numerous to try and even count, so many little things can completly corrupt your savegame withough ever being aware of them, like a ship being only 10km away with moderate visibility (enough that your watch can't see it) will likely cause a CTD if/when you try to load that savegame. If you have taken any hull damage at all (even if its just 0.1%) it increases your chances for a CTD. Savegames with 100% hull integrity seem to be a lot more stable than others under any kind of circumstances. |

I only speak from previous experience of the kernel.dll CTD, which is memory related. I've not had a kernel error show up if say I save in port or right next to another ship at sea, these normally cite just sh3.exe as the cause. If the OP just said 'I'm getting a CTD' and nothing else, I'd suggest the things you have before going into patches and boot edits.
Mileage will vary depending on system specs, granted, but it worked for me when I experimented with both FMInteriors and MFM, although I've yet to try with both simultaneously, somehow I don't think it'd work. At the end of the day, you can try. With backups done properly you won't screw things up.

Ok guys I think I found the problem. First of all I have the 4 gig patch installed, and on windows 7, SH3 version 1.4 so everything there is fine. Its obviously a memory issue, what I do is just restart the computer (since the ram is erased), and then start Sh3 again. My intel controller uses virtual memory off of the ram, so I'm guessing what happens is, the memory succeeds or is used up, which causes the crash, because there's not enough to run the engine, plus the graphics from the card. Oh well, I installed game boost, but can I install the lite harbor traffic for WAC 4.1?? Because Lite harbor traffic came with GWX, and it alters the campaign files. This would be the time to change my mods around since I'm in port again after a long patrol.

When you say you applied the 4GB patch, I'm assuming you mean that you applied the patch to the SH3.exe file that will allow it to make use of more RAM than the 2GB (?) to which it was initially limited.
However I don't think you've said whether you are running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows. If you are running the 32-bit version, it will not matter how much RAM you have installed or how much RAM the SH3.exe will be able to use - the OS itself cannot recognize more than 4GB max. Using the 3GB switch in the boot.ini file may help make more RAM available for games and other applications, but AFAIK you haven't said whether or not you are using it. If you are running the 64-bit version your OS can recognize and use more RAM provided you have it installed, and if you do have more RAM the game should be able to use a decent chunk of it once it's been patched for that purpose. In either case I would advise that you disable all mods and try at first to run the game without any additional modifications, if you have not done so already, to see if the same CTD occurs. |

And you've got, what, 6 gigs of RAM in your machine? It that's the case and you've run the 4GB patch for SH3.exe, memory should not be an issue.
Do you have a separate video card, and if so, how much memory with that? I don't know that trying to run the game with an onboard gfx controller would cause a memory-based crash, but without a graphics card with at least 64 MB RAM (128 recommended) you're still not up to spec for the stock game, much less any mods/supermods that might require more in the way of graphics performance. Someone else will have to answer the question of whether or not that would be likely to cause a Kernel.dll crash. In the meantime I would still recommend disabling all mods and seeing if you still get the same CTD. In any CTD situation that's the only way to be sure it's not some modification that's causing the problem. |

I recently started receiving the ctd "kernel.dll" 3days ago
![]() ![]() ![]() Windows Vista Home Premium, 32-bit(service pack2) 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002 Amd Turion 64 X2 TL-60, 2000 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 logical processors Installed Physical Memory=RAM 3.0GB Total Physical Memory=2.94GB Available Physical Memory=1.90GB Total Virtual Memory=6.09GB Available Physical Memory=5.12GB Page File Space=3.23GB NVIDIA GeForce 7150M/nForce 630M core clock=425Mhz memory interface=32-bit total available graphics 1071 MB dedicated video memory 0 MB < Yeah, I know but still ran without stuttering on FPS. shared system memory 1007 MB I have all drivers updated, disabled certain programs on startup which i don't use at all except the windows of course. Also, lowered the settings on pre-rendered fps rate NVIDIA. EVEN A COOLING PAD THE SIZE OF CAR RADIATOR FAN UNDER LAPTOP to keep it the coolest as possible, cleaned out the exhaust vents on laptop also so it breathe better. I thought maybe something got corrupted so I ran Norton 360 on boot, Windows Defender, I've even reset my computer to original cleaned out garbage programs, disk cleanup, defragmented, reinstalled SH3, reinstalled GWX3.0 Gold, added the mods mentioned above and now crashes with Sound Act file, with same time compression mention above. Sorry for making this long but just get an Idea of what I've done and haven't done!. The key is I think I got to take step backwards undoing what I've done to the SH3, mod by mod and trial & error play until it stops crashing! It maybe the mods or ships added or I maybe pushing the limits of what my computer handle or pushing SH3! Good Luck ![]() |

This is just a shot in the dark but on the b25 SF Grass Full v2 is that the one where the images in the mod are 2048x2048?
I ask because I was using that as well, and used to get CTDs after I'd already loaded the game and was out on patrol... always happened in the same general spot regardless of time compression. Everything else seemed fine. After disabling all mods and adding them back one by one it turned out to be that particular mod, when I switched to the other version with files of 1024x1024 instead the CTDs stopped and I was able to add all my other mods back in with no problems. Granted I know very little about most of the other mods you have listed so it could be something else entirely. |
