Why did the development team not give us "The Ultimate Silent Hunter" this time?
why did they give us just another silent hunter game.. ? It's really not that special. They released this game prematurely, incomplete,..'done in a haste' they rushed things and did a crappy job |

Silent Hunter has ALWAYS been a game that didn't stand on its own. Every Silent Hunter game I enjoy was only 'worthy' after the EXTREMELY Talented and Dedicated modders of this very community got their hands on it. Silent Hunter 3 is Garbage without GWX, and Silent Hunter 5 is garbage without Magnum Opus.
Its just a fact. The Silent Hunter 5 engine is BRILLANT but like any Silent Hunter game thats been pushed out and left without love you need to give it time to mature.. and grow. Now is about that time when Silent Hunter 5 is starting to look very adult. Playing Unmodded is just never the way Silent Hunter should be played. |

Why are you asking thse questions a year after it was released? We've had these discussions many times now, and the answer is always the same - no one knows.
@ Drewcifer: SH1 ran perfectly out of the box, and though the handful of mods improved it, they were never necessary. On the other hand SH1 was pre-UBI.

Ok I'll give you that... but the fact Silent Hunter really does lean hard on its mod community to survive.. with the exception of the FIRST Silent Hunter. lol.. I think my point stands, but I will give you there was ONE jewel that didn't need to be polished to death to be fun. |

Because I just got the game for the first time a couple of days ago and I was more disappointed than impressed. The game has only one type of U-boat which I knew already...ok so the dev-team had no time or data to model all uboat interiors... ok, understood but there is no excuse for the war ending in 1943. It's exactly after 1943 that the U-boat war gets interesting. However I found even more surprises. The clock inside the submarine does not even work.. the needles are not turning. There are no buttons you can click like the depth-under-keel device, and some important gauges (battery level, compressed air) are not there or are showing incorrect readings. The TDC computer you can not adjust yourself manually. I think in all submarine games out there you could do that. You can not adjust your course manually..or your depth accurately. ShIII is much better here. The crew don't move or behave nearly as realistically as one would expect after seeing the Trailer. In port you arrive one day and depart on the next mission the next day.. Im already in February 1940, and I have like 5 or 6 patrols. Thats not realistic. It was not like this in real life. As for wolfpacks - I have not seen any other U-boat out there. The crew are the same people, same names, same faces..In all submarines... The Ju-88 aircraft is actually a Ju-188 totally different plane..etc etc Yes the Modding community might improve the game alot, but I doubt they can recreate the interior of a type II or a type IX boat. I would have gladly waited another year or two but at least give us a totally realistic U-boat simulator - one that has immersion and feels like the real thing. Silent Hunter III came close.. they only modeled 2 or 3 compartments and used the excuse that "the captain rarely went inside the other parts of the u-boat".. hey at least we have a gramophone ! ![]() I'm waiting for Silent Hunter 6. I don't think my expectations are too high here - rather that other people's standards are too low. To be honest here even a game like "Aces of the Deep" in some ways has more immersion and realism and "feels like the real thing" than Silent Hunter 5 ![]() |

U-Boats, U-Boats...I never understood the obsession some players have for WW2 U-Boats: no stadimeter, no TDC, no radar, obsolete by 1942, hapless targets in 43-45. Only the beginning part of the war is interesting. With U.S. Fleet boats, you see another way of fighting a submarime war, as dangerous and ultimately more successful than Donitz's effort. I uninstalled SH3 the day SH4 was released and never regretted it. SH4 is on my hard drive and still gets (some) play time.

When SH4 was released there was a huge (and I mean HUGE) outcry. Most of the U-boat supporters had the opposite complaint - US fleet boats are boring because the war gets easier as time passes, the tougher things get for the u-boats the better the game is etc. I think both complaints are based on personal preference, and therefore valid as opinions but invalid as complaints. Me? I love the history and the equipment, so both are wonderful. ![]()

Anywho this topic used to bug the crap out of me. Not so much now. In my mind it doesn't matter what other people say, think, or do; because I know, *I* have read up on the history of, played, and modded for both Uboats and fleet boats - equally. Not everyone here can say that, and i think it makes me a better player/submarine enthusiast/subsimmer/whatever. |
