I am sure I am not the only one old enough to remember duck and cover drills in Elementary school.

And the TV and radio "This is a test, this is only a test. Had it been a real emergency you would be directed to a Conelrad station" spots. When I moved to Bountiful, Utah in 1971 they were still having weekly tests of the air-raid siren at the fire station.
