Not that i know of. In SH3 you at least knew which sub you commanded.
I usually look at the conning tower to inform myself which type it is. For example an VIIA has a more slimmer conning tower and no flaggstaff. Whereas VIIB has a more stocky type. The difference between VIIB and VIIC is a tough nut to crack but are visually seen. VIIC´s conning tower is a bit slimmer and has a slight twistier edge. Obviously, VIIC/41 has a bigger Wintergarden and two flak guns so not that hard. Depends also in which phase you are in the game. In the beginning it is a VIIA. Check also the subs name. The higher the name the "better" sub.
