If you all need string there is a drowning trap by the rail from newbie land to the south near the parthenon. It's got a spawner, but it only spawns spiders.

Nope, just log out and then log back in and they're gone.

They do seem to be getting bigger though...

My best guess is it's a compatibility issue with something Notch has changed on how the world works.
