I had an interesting read yesterday, about the problems in air traffic. I only say: bad preparation, bad training of the winter crews, bad equipment, and bad imagination (why should you expect ice and snow in winter, eh?) .

I read the comparsion between the airports in Frankfurt and Stockholm. In Frankfurt, the winter service needs 30 minutes to de-ice one runway with their full group of vehicles and servicemen. In Stockholm, they need - world record holder they are - 5 minutes. They run a swift ballet with their deicing vehicles, which is better coordinated and moving faster than anywhere else.

Imagine: while the Germans would have cleaned one half of the first runway, the Swedes already would have cleared all three of Frankfurt's runways completely!

The article said Stockholm is inviting other European airports to take classes in winter services there.

The immense problems with the German rail services, are selfmade. Too much resources and reserves were killed in order to prepare for bringing it to the stockmarket. Too much money got sunk in prestigious mamoth projects, money that was not spend for maintaining proper train and railnet maintenance. And the S-Bahn in Berlin - don't get me started. I assume in many third world countries they have more capable train systems than in Berlin.

Christmas snow hits European travel plans

Passengers slept overnight at Brussels' Zaventem airport.Stranded air passengers have spent the night at airports in Paris and Brussels after freezing weather severely disrupted Christmas travel. Some 200 people slept overnight at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, which cancelled 400 flights because of snow and ice.Flights and trains were also disrupted in Belgium, where significant snow fell overnight, and in Germany.

Well, we had a smattering of snow here Christmas eve night and Christmas day morning, so I guess we qualify for a white Christmas, the first I've ever experienced. It's not *looks out of window* doing anything out there now though, clear starry skies. One of the things about being slap bang next to the sea I guess.

This is just the beginning of the season, so you may make an upgrade on clothes and car fronts for the family, for more snow and cold will,

Actually Steed they changed the rules if I understood the met office presenter the other day.

Snow has to actually fall, lying snow doesn't count but then again the bookies were probably on the right side of the profit line.

More significant snow on the way for Monday night,

Boxing Day started exceptionally cold with -16C (10F) being recorded in Pershore, Worcestershire. In fact if December continues as cold as it has been so far, it will be the United Kingdom's coldest December since records began in 1910. However, with temperatures in most areas set to rise from Tuesday this is still not guaranteed. While this weekend has been visibly white for many of us across the country with plenty of lying snow, only the cities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Lincoln, as well as parts of North Yorkshire, had an official white Christmas this year with fresh falling snow on Christmas Day.

The scientists say it's "global climate WARMing" on the planet now In fact to have real white Xmas with falling snow is much more better than "real grey" ones with rain. Just enjoy it as you wish
So Merry Chriestmas to all of you.

ps. We got -26C today at 8.30 am (GMT +3), and at 12 a.m. it rises to -20C. Its normall for us in late Dec. The "terrain" outside looks really great and misterious.
