Newbie Problem w/SH3 downloads

SH3 installed via CD-ROM. I have not yet tried to install the download of GWX3 since I am not computer savvy enough move files/folders around...but that is a moot issue since the little audio mod produced the same failure. Incidentally, I get the same error message after loading the CD-ROM version of SEAWOLVES Submarines On The Hunt Expansion Pack for Silent Hunter III that I purchased (which is basically the same as GWX3, no?). I had to do an uninstall and reinstall of SH3 after these failures in order to get the game to load again. I'm really baffled as to why a commercial CD-ROM expansion designed within my system parameters crashes the primary game...which leads me to believe there is nothing wrong with SUBSIMS downloads themselves. This stuff is "beyond my pay grade", as the saying goes.
