I think the policy isn't strict enough, I know Neal tries to avoid from getting his "hands dirty", but in most (read:all) forums I've been to other that subsim, threads that go out of topic for a prolonged time are locked to keep the board tidy.

That policy exists on all of the topical forums, with the off-topic threads being moved to GT. GT serves as the grab-bag of OT vitriol and spam. Really, I think we do an excellent job of keeping the primary forums clear.

That being said, I do agree with your sentiment that this seems a private joke; intended for a select few. Of course, that is not against the rules, and the thread isn't going to be causing a full-on battle royale like that plethora of political topics, so I don't see any harm in it.
