Airsoft Sniper

Hey all,

I've been going through some internet stuff and was thinking of getting an Airsoft rifle for when I go home. As I live next to a field, there' a lot of opportunities to shoot a few pesky rodents such as possums, mice, squirrels and racoons. As I don't want to go through the whole gun registration process, but would still like to "hunt" so to speak (anything I would manage to kill would probably end up at my uncles, he's the big hunter in the family) I thought Airsoft guns would be the way to go.

I figured the cheapest and quickest place to look would be Canadian tire (I remember seeing them there when I had to go get some new cross-training running shoes). Quickly I saw something I liked, http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows....jsp?locale=en

However, after seeing the review, and seeing it's not a bolt action, as I thought (I'm a sucker for bolt-action rifles) I went searching again. After a little bit more searching I found something I really liked the look of.

However, the only problem I see in this is that it seems to me to be more of a competition rifle (airsoft wars or whatever they call them..) rather then something you'd hunt with.

Do any of you own any airsoft (bolt-action snipers preferably) you could recommend? Also, if any of you own the UTG Mk96 or Nitro Piston, what would your opinions/reviews be? If at the very least I can fool around and put a few shots into a cardboard target that's what I would do. But I figured the neighbours seeing me shooting field rodents with this monster wouldn't look right

VSR-10 G-spec, might not be the most realistic sniper, but its got a TON of aftermarket parts you can put into it.

As I'm not really going to be messing around with buying new barrels, triggers, etc (maybe just a new scope and sling), add-on modifications aren't a really huge factor me me.

Krauter, be aware that an Airsoft rifle is not the same as an Air Rifle. Air rifles traditionally fire .177 or .22 cal. metal pellets, darts, or BBs, and are useful for plinking away at steel targets and small game (pointed pellets are the best for this use) and WILL break skin, even through lightweight clothing.

Airsoft rifles are generally "sport" air guns, firing softer plastic .20g BBs that MAY break bare skin at close enough range, and are generally used only for Airsoft events, such as small-unit tactics or recreation, rather than small-game hunting.

Airsoft tend towards real-world replicas, where air rifles are content to be what they are without re-creating the appearance of a real world weapon (not always, but generally).

Check with any friends you may have in local law enforcement or check your area's laws regarding ownership of both types before you buy. Good luck!

Aah thank you very much Growler I was not under that impression

I will definately make sure I ask local PD, but from my knowledge, neither are illegal in the sense you need a permit (though having them in public is a different matter)

My pleasure, Krauter. Check out a company called Crosman. They're Air gun and Airsoft manufacturers, and do a pretty good job on their website keeping the two separate.

I included the law enforcement reminder simply because it's never a bad thing to remind others who might be reading the thread to be safe.

and for "varmint hunting" you are better off getting a pellet gun or a .177 bb gun.

my friends and I do airsoft wars and we try to use a lot of high-powered airsoft guns, I'm afraid though unless you brain one of them you aren't taking them down with a 6mm plastic bb.

Aye, was confused by the term BB with an Airsoft gun- a 6mm BB is almost a paintball.

Anyway I had a crosman 2100 years ago and loved it, the squirrels didn't. I see they're still available.

Sounds like an air rifle is what you want, not an airsoft.

BTW, In Canada, any air rifle with a muzzle velocity above 700 F.P.S. is considered to be a firearm under the law, and requires exactly the same permits/F.A.C., etc. (700 F.P.S. is pretty hot for an air rifle).

I have... Oh wait.... It's a BB gun nevermind. Although it can fire single loaded .177 bullet.



Edit: Ah well, I'll post about it anyways. It's a BB gun that can fire .177 bullets(pellets?), quite commonly used for professional BB tournaments. Will put a round through anyone if they're in the way, and comes with an adjustable scope. The only problem with it is the fact that between each shot you need to pump 5-10 times, and if you're using pellets you have to manually load them. Although it does have a BB reservoir.

The Rifle I was looking at clocked in at around 475 fps out of the box. Another, comes in at around 510-520. I'm leaning towards the 475 one, however it greatly resembles (indeed it's based on) the L96 AW Rifle.

From what I understand, does this make it illegal?

In America, it's only illegal if it doesn't have the orange tip on the end(if It looks like another rifle). But this is only form my understanding.

My rifle is 750fps, and doesn't have the orange tip, nor does it require any permits.

Aah, from what I've seen it is not illegal if you remove the orange tip (in Canada).

Really I only want one for target shooting, Airsoft wars never really take place around my area. And come to think of it, the only time vermin come out of the fields is when I'm in Montreal no where near a field.
