Starcraft was released with a pseudo DRM arrangement (I think). You must create an account on the Battlenet website to register the game after installation is complete. When you launch the game you also log in to the Battlenet site. I'm pretty sure you can still play the game offline but not sure what happens to saved games.
I had to reinstall my operating system (and games) a couple months ago. When I reinstalled and launched Starcraft I was right where I left off in the campaign so this tells me my saved game is on the Battlenet site. I think this is not bad so long as I can still play offline, save my progress, then have the saved game files synchronize themselves the next time I log in. Too bad Ubisoft can't follow this approach.
