OK, just thought I'd post the results so far to make some interesting reading. Initial contact was made, cloudy, foggy, rainy, basicly horrible conditions. Strictly used radar to obtain convoy's track and speed. Ships on scope appeared in single line. Lead ship, followed by three trailing ships. Raced ahead to intercept with no fear of being spotted. Visibility about 700yds.
At a position just ahead of the lead ship, which was assumed the escort, I turned 90 degrees to the target track. Watching the radar, I could see this was going to be a text book intercept. Reduceing speed, I closed. Suddenly out of the gloom comes the escort. Being at maximum visible range, he passes without seeing me. I decide to dive to periscope depth, and attempt a DO attack since due to the reduced visibility, there would be no time to use the Stadimeter and obtain correct target ID. The lead target made it's way out of the fog. It was a Large Modern Composit freighter. As the points of interest passed the wire, I fired my fish. A total of 4 fish were now on their way, at fairly close range. Torpedo #1 DUD! Torpedo #2 DUD! Numbers three and four thankfully detonated just behind the stack and aft crane. After some time, she began to settle by the stern, before finally going down. At the present time, I am resurfaced and chaseing down the remaining ships. Night is falling, and no sign of improved weather. This should be fun. |
