Globally emissions are increasing, not decreasing, and unless something is done relatively soon (especially given how slowly we as a species tend to react to such stuff), we will hit the tipping over point which would be catastrophic for our species, and many other species that we share the planet with.

Human nature is to be concerned only about ones own prosperity. If it won't effect the individual directly, they typically will not care. The people in charge do not care about what might happen after they're dead.
