I remember seeing a program on History Channel a long time ago about WWII sub warfare in the PTO, when it actually had history related shows and not trash like swamp people, iceroad truckers, pawn stars etc on.Do not recall the name of the show(if anyone remembers and knows where I can purchase it) but remembered I liked it.Below is a clip from it I found on youtube by chance.

Awesome clip. I too wish History Channel would go back to the programming they used to have. I think a lot of the actual "history shows" are shown on HIstory International now. History Channel has become too commercialized so it shows programs that should be on Discovery channel

The series is called "The silent service", look around amazon. The video's in question are the first part of the series i think. I bought these on amazon some time ago. There's several episodes. On talks about just the captains (where this youtube clip comes from). I have it at home, but haven't watched them in awhile. I think theres 2 or 3 CD's, and 3 or 4 episodes total for the WW2 part of it.

It is outstanding. Like Ducimus said, there is one episode on the captains, one on torpedos, one on tactics, and one on the classes of boats. Each episode is better than the next. I bought my set used from a vendor on Amazon - keep watching and snatch up the next one that comes available.

Yup, thats the one. I've watched it like 5 times now. Pity real history is becoming increasingly rare on the history channel.

Yeah, I never watch any of those boring para-history shows either. Luckily, I have about 4 or 5 History Channels in my line-up and always keep the channels set on the 2 military history channels.

Up here in the Great White North we have "History Television" which is a Canadian watered-down version of your History Channel. It essentially follows the HC's trends although we're enjoying such shows as;

Dogfights
Greatest Tank Battles
M.A.S.H.
WWII in HD (essentially WWII in colour)
Finding the Fallen (not a regular show but repeated fairly often)
Chasing Mummies
Lost Worlds
Trashopolis (a unique view of history particularly when they explain how ancient Rome handled its tons of garbage. Weird but historical nonetheless).
Fact and Film (Each week you'll get a documentary on a historical item followed by the Hollywood treatment of the same subject. e.g. A documentary on Alcatraz followed by Clint Eastwood's movie or a documentary on William Wallace followed by Braveheart etc).

Most of the above are US-produced and are either on HC or have already been shown on HC. On the other hand we also have American Pickers, Pawn Stars and Ice Road Truckers. To be honest I don't mind Pawn Stars as they usually have one or two historical items per show ergo it can claim legitimacy in being on History Television. The other two erm....not so much. American Pickers as with IRT belongs on Discovery. IRT maybe in 20 years could be considered historical.

So our HT still leans on the historical side but there's a LOT of repetition of programming and pathetic attempts to give it a Canadian flair (ie. creat a show which is simply window dressing to introduce someone else's documentary).

Having said all that I'd take either History channel over the absolute crap SPIKE TV regurgitates day in and day out! When SPIKE first started I thought it might actually be OK but IMHO it's the equivalent of a game console vs a PC, LOL.

Here in Brazil the History Channel programming follows more or less that of the U.S.. I do remember when we had a LOT of shows about WWII, lots of aviation related programs (WWII, Cold War, Vietnam), etc. Good old times. I have to agree with all of you, because I really can't stand one more show about truckers fighting or a Las Vegas pawn shop...

Wow! A powerful endorsement of the stay on the surface, yo-yo tactics and the high periscope techniques I learned from Eugene Fluckey, who served later in the war than Morton and O'Kane. I'm not surprised that they were the ones to invent the techniques, although I would have expected Sam Dealey more, as he was a personal friend of Fluckey's before his loss.

This also shows that the real optical lookouts were far superior to our abilities in Silent Hunter 4. Skippers could have confidence that they could spot the planes before they themselves were spotted. Without radar, we can't say that with more than a 60% probability in my estimation. Still, optical yo-yo works in SH4 too, although it is a bit too exciting for reality.

I have a complete set of a old tv series from the 50's called Silent Service.This show used actors in the different stories and it brings the history out very well.The series are on vhs and I have yet to put them on DVD.I will if anyone would like a set all they would have to do is pay for the mailings? The other idea I have is to make a set and see if Neal would want to get them reproduced and sell them on the site for keep SubSim up and running,I will ask him.

I would be all for this, have looked for Silent Service online (DVD) but have not been able to find it.
