The whole time I spent dealing with Amazon was around six months by the time I decided to cancel my order.

I've had that same thing happen with Amazon. Their order update feature sucks, as do their estimates of delivery time. Two years ago, around this time I ordered a book as a Christmas present for my daughter. Delivery estimate was 6 weeks. With 12 weeks until Christmas I figured I had plenty of time. Christmas came and went with no word from Amazon about a delay. So I contacted them. They said they didn't see a reason for the delay, but it would take another 6 weeks. My daughter's birthday is in March, so I left the order standing. March came and went without a word from Amazon.com. I complained again, same response. So out of sheer bloody-mindedness I left the order standing. After Christmas last year I decided to cancel the order. A few months ago the book was still listed as 'available' with a 6 week delivery estimate.
