Somali Man tries to car bomb Christmas

Bomb is FBI made fake...

Quote:
It said Mohamud was warned several times about the seriousness of his plan, that women and children could be killed, and that he could back out, but he told agents: "Since I was 15 I thought about all this;" and "It's gonna be a fireworks show ... a spectacular show."

Not the first sting in the past year! While I don't necessarily disapprove of grabbing these types, you gotta wonder... how much of it is hardcore, remorseless terrorist and how much of it is the FBI leading a really, really stupid teenager on a fantasy power trip.

Well there is mention of an unidentified contact in northwest Pakistan.

Quote:
U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton released federal court documents to The Associated Press and the Oregonian newspaper that show the sting operation began in June after an undercover agent learned that Mohamud had been in regular e-mail contact with an "unindicted associate" in Pakistan's northwest, a frontier region where al-Qaida and Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents are strong.

Like I said, I don't necessarily object, nor do I think age and gullibility are an excuse for criminal intent. In his case, I think that intent seems pretty clear. I just hope it doesn't give an impetus to the FBI to set up would-be terrorists in ways that are more insidious. In his case, I also have to wonder whether instead of a set-up, a "we're on to you" warning after they discovered his contact might have done the job of spooking him enough.

Still, glad noone was hurt and this guy's behind bars, no doubt.

I'd be willing to bet that'll be his lawyer's main defense, i.e., entrapment.

Doesn't work when the guy picks up a hooker on the street who turns out to be a UC cop.

Shouldn't work when a kid parks a bomb on the street and it turns out to be a FBI fake.

But I think that depends on how long they've been involved with him. A hooker isn't someone who feeds you information and promises materials for a year or more. I don't think the defense will ultimately fly either, of course.

According to the article he was given several opportunities to examine the ramifications of his planned action but it didn't deter him. Now there's a lot of room there for reading between the lines but on the face of it i'm not sure that spooking him was going to be enough.

Besides :

He probably wanted to get caught and sent to Gitmo to get what most Americans can't get....great healthcare....at no cost to him.

Scary stuff because:
My wife wanted to go to that xmas party! Good thing I hate going to portland.
I didn't hear about it until I heard it on the BBC!
The kid went to the same high school where my brother went. Nice part of town, not the somali slums in Seattle.

They need to send this kid back to somali, get him the hell outta my country. Apparently he rather live there than here.
