Default Death policy

So I just got myself killed, unsure what to do. Do you suck it up and start an entirely new career or say "Screw that" and load an earlier save?

It depends on your playing level, to me. When I was starting out and just learning, I would go back to a saved game and try again. But after a while, I started using the DiD policy - "Dead is Dead". It does make it a lot more restricting on your actions if you realize that any screw-up on your part means death, and having to start over! Much more realistic - and that is the name of the game for the majority of us here.

If you are learning the game (and who of us isn't, really?), screw it and reload. Run the tactical solution a few times until you get it right, then go on to better things. Only way to learn, in my book.

I have played several years, and now play DID. But I still save my patrols fairly often (always out of sight and on the surface, though, to avoid crash problems) so I can replay the ones where I came to grief. Always something to learn. I don't play them past the sinking, though. The career is dead... I think of it as a "lessons learned training exercise."

The single missions, by the way, are excellent for training, especially the ones supplied by the GWX team.

I deleted the save games. Not one step splash backwards!

I should also try to be more realistic and NOT engage destroyers with the deck gun. But it's so darn fun... (Not why I sank.)

Uh, don't want to make another thread for this...

How would I name myself "Missing Name" in German? I entered "Ohne einen Namen" but am unsure if this is correct.

@Gargamel: I turned on realistic vulnerability specifically to make it more difficult to do so.

It's your game and you can play however you choose. I play dead is dead, I don't think I would get anything out of the game playing any other way.
Returning home after a re-load, getting medals, would I feel that I'd earnt them?
Of course the only real dead is dead is to hire a boat take it to the exact spot of your demise, throw your computer overboard and jump in after it. A little extreme, so I settle for a new career but using the bug avoidance rule of no upgrades prior to 1st patrol to up the rookie factor. No radar detection makes it really tough later on in the war.

In the early days I reckon most of us have reloaded an earlier save to see if we could have tackled our demise better.

I don't get to plat that often these days but it is always DiD.

I'll tend to stay dead and start my next kaluen's career from around that date, sometimes I think *sod it* and start back in '39. I'll only reload a save if I'm in the middle of trying a new mod but that career never counts towards much anyway.

I'll play DiD unless the death is the result of something other than regular gameplay. For example if I install a mod that causes my hull to collapse 10 seconds after loading up the career, I'll uninstall the mod and start from the second last save. If I'm killed in battle I'll start a new career back in '39 usually.

As a result, I've never made it to the end of the war yet. Farthest I've gotten is about early '43 since I tend to be a little too reckless for my crews liking (and well being). I like the thought posted above of starting a new career from the date the other was destroyed...it might allow me to see the end of the war so I think I'll give it a shot next time.

Started a new career via SH3 Commander. Seriously, why didn't I install this before?

Kaluen Ohne einen Namen, commander of U-127, a IXB.

It's December 1939. Time to give Jenkins hell.

DID unless it is a system/save game 'glitch'.

I've been playing since the heyday of Silent Service, and I don't recall ever having an option to reload an earlier save, which means I've always played DiD. On the other hand I have a career going out of each available command as I slowly work my way through the war, so I can't exactly boast about 'realism' in that department.
