I'm no expert in contemporary weaponry but i'm pretty sure the ammo magazines he's wearing aren't for the weapons he's hefting.

Your right (of course). I think he is a gunner on a Chinook (or some other chopper), the 5.56mm clips are for his rifle or carbine while the M240s are for the chopper.
