We'll there's still slovenian politics. a ongoing battle beetwen the red and white guard, a subject most smart slovenians are sick of it but both sides still have enough sheep to keep it going. I don tknow about republicans vs democrats, but here its like:

coalition: lets have an idiotic plan of saving the economy which in long run will ruin it
oposition: NO, we have a better plan and will deny you ever implementing your plan, since your plan is not our plan and our plan will tank the economy faster
C: lets reward a company that survived the crisis and is making massive profit
O: NO, lets sell the company to foreigners
C: lets save that boy that is drowing in the lake
O: NO, we will not save the boy because you are left/right and we are not and we will prevent you from saving the boy

ITs not politics, it's a tragic circus filled with drunken incompetent clowns abusing that little slovenian tradition of ''distrust thy neghbour'' by creating a de facto state of civil war during every election, wasting everybody's time and having nothing done. Sometimes the oposition actually supports an idiotic plan or law, because they know it will be so stupid that the coalition might actually loose the election because of it, regardless what the consicuencess will be. Sometimes an actuall civil war would be better, people would have something to do and we could hang every SoB without the law being brought down on us

Get used to it. I'm guessing most of the folks talking politics here wont stop for at least another week. As i understand the usual cycle is to work up into a rabid state. Start watching any indicator that their favorite team is wining, and after the election they'll do one of two things. Whine, or brag for about a week. After that, most will probably, finally, STFU. A couple never will.

Frankly, i never like to discuss politics at all. Only reason i did in any capacity, is because that's all their is around here now. One politico thread after another. I'm tired of it. Apparently, im one of the few people who grew up with some sage advice.....

Never talk about politics or religion. (least of all with friends IMO) My father told me that at an early age. I didn't quite understand it until i got older. Politics and religion are things that make up the core of a person. Discussing that stuff, is prodding the very thing that makes a person tick, and its easy to get sucked into a vicious "discussion". The end result is, they'll either love you, or hate you with a fervant passion.. It's best to just respect a persons beliefs, and leave it be. Unfortuantley, not everyone is capable of doing that.

Skipped history classes much? I tend to think the largest immigration waves to the US were well before European countries turned into "socialist nanny states" as you would most probably call it.

Go read a history book yourself. People have been leaving Europe because they wanted to be shed of old world restrictions long before socialism ever reared it's ugly head.

I do this in personal relationships pretty much 100%. Try as hard as possible to avoid the subject, if unavoidable, try hard to not get nailed down.

Forums... totally different, least to me. Both politics and religion are really interesting topics to debate, but as you said, you cannot really engage in debate in person if you follow that sage advice. So a forum is one of the few places you CAN get into those arguments.

If that makes any sense.

FWIW, I think even the most strident posters on opposite sides here would probably be fast friends over a few beers.

It's a tap dance. Espeically around my Fiancee's father. He's a kindly old man of 82, and a devote Mormon. You go to his house, its ALL he talks about. I just nod my head, give generalized non answers, mixed with a little circle talk. I'm very careful to never reveal any personal beliefs. That opens the door to a religous prodding, which i've done well to avoid thus far.

Political rally's? My mom's an avid tea partier, and much to my surprise, attends community rallies. I can't say i share her political devtoion, but she's doing a helluva lot more then spouting her opinion on a message board.

I cannot see how these 2 statements contradict. The biggest immigration from the Old to the New World was in the late 19th/early 20th century. The rise of the welfare state started after WW1 - just the time the first "socialistic" country was founded.

I can attest that being punched in the face and getting pepper sprayed sucks. Haven't been run over by a tank so far though.

Ehm, as far as I can tell you're telling the exact same thing

Anyway, if you look at the facts:

you can clearly see there's a massive drop in immigration rates at about the same time Socialism got a foothold in Europe. (same goes for total number of immigrants, see http://www.cato.org/pubs/policy_report/pr-imquant.html)

So clearly the current European political climate is not as TTM states "why you all left to begin with".
