what is stranger still is that he passed all the psych and security test along the way, becoming commander of one of the bigger bases up here, without anyone clueing in to any of this.

He was stopped in a purely random road block by an alert cop who noticed something odd and took the time to investigate.

Any amusing details of the story, though, really pale in comparison to disturbing details such as this:
