There was also during the Luftwaffe bombing campaign of Britain, decoy towns and villages. Areas where lights were set up in the pattern of houses and lamps, obviously dimmed a bit so to not make it too obvious. The hope was that the Luftwaffe would lose their bearings during night flying and drop their bombs in the wrong places. Of course, it's a bit hard to decoy London...
