Funny thing is that its not... they really took a worn out F-5 Tiger and rebuilt it with a F/A-18 style tail then declared it a totally new aircraft.

The F-5 never carried much. It has just seven hardpoints, 2 on the wing tips for 'winders or tanks, four on the wings for bombs or light missiles (IIRC 2 could carry AIM9 and two could carry Mavs, Zunis or Bombs but no MERs) and a centerline tank or bomb.

This pic shows the hardpoints well.
