Then I really dont know what genre you would call them as 'Alternative Rock' is a bit too general in this day an age.
LP are infulenced by nu-metal (rap metal), which is influenced by metal and ...drum roll... Rap.

Its like the way a band like 'Greenday' are not really a punk to the ear, but it is still where they originated from.
imo bands like LP and Greenday etc are maybe sub-genres at best, they took there style from someplace and made a few alterations, they did not really create something band new.

First of all - you are not insinuating Metal is a subgenre of Alternative Rock, are you?

Secondly, Alternative Rock is not as general as you seem to think.

LP is (was) Alternative Rock. Some of their early songs were "nu-metal" (nu-metal is barely metal anyway) influenced, but they never reached Metal.
And they're not an own subgenre of Metal either, they're simply not Metal. For something to be a subgenre, it has to have some of the defining characteristics of the "main genre". LP doesn't have any of the characteristics of Metal.
They do have the characteristics of Alernative Rock though.

Green Day is Alternative Rock-influenced Pop Punk.

Green Day is Alternative Rock-influenced Pop Punk.

LP definataly had a nu metal edge to their sound when they first hit the scene, now i dont know, I ve not heard ther latest stuff.
but google them and you will find that nu metal is still what alot people use to describe them.
(reputations stick i guess.)

Not insinuating anything about Metal though, to me 'Alternative rock' couldnt be more vague if it tried.
It is a kind of 'meh' catagory when no one knows what to lable it
Both Greenday and LP are good examples of this, they both fall under the 'alternative rock' catagory yet they sound worlds apart (when i last checked anyway)

'Alternative' means just that i guess, an alternative to <whatever>.
and Rock just means a guitar & drum outfit. if thats not general I dont know what is.

And Greenday were not influcenced by pop-punk since the term 'pop-punk' was pretty much invented to describe them (and the Offsping) in the 90's
Billie Joe Armstrong grew up listening to bands like the Clash, the Ramones and other 70s/80s era Punk bands. The term 'pop-punk' didnt really exist back then.
But its true that a bands influence and their actual sound can often be two different things.

Yep, reputations stick. Though I must agree they did have a Metal influence in their debut album Hybrid Theory.
Nowadays, this influence is gone.

Ehm, first of all, Green Day is Pop Punk (though they do have some Alternative Rock songs).
Secondly, if you take one of those Alternative Rock songs of Green Day, they do not sound worlds apart at all. Just compare the chorus riffs of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day and "What I've Done" by LP. You'll find they are remarkably similar:

E|----1--------------4----------------------6--------|
Both are riffs consisting of 4 different chords that are are played either 4 (GD) or 8 (LP) times before moving on to the next chord.

And yes, of course even the Alt Rock GD songs sound very different from LP. But that's because they are different bands. Amon Amarth sounds very different from Dark Tranquillity, yet no one will disagree they are both Melodic Death Metal.

You're right about Rock as a genre not saying a thing about the music You're wrong about the "Alternative" part however.
Alternative Rock definitely has some characteristics that distinguishes it from other Rock genres. Generally speaking, Alternative Rock has riffs consisting of long successions of just one chord, with medium guitar distortion:

Punk rock has somewhat more complex riffs:

E|-----7-------4---5--4---5--|
Metal characterizes itself by its often fast and complex rhythms and riffs, heavy use of distortion, and often muted chords:

That's why I said they are Pop-Punk. The influence I was talking about is an Alternative Rock-influence
