A warning about ATI drivers, I bought a ASUS EAH5870 Ver.2 specifically to play SH5, I installed the original driver that was into the CD included within this video card box, the result was a steady 60FPS everywhere and with all 3D video settings at max resolution, later I updated the drivers (10-5, 10-6, 10-7, 10-8 etc etc ) , and I noticed there was a progressive drop in FPS with every new driver version , when I updated the 10-8 version the FPS drop to just 3FPS ( yes just three FPS ) , I sort out this problem installing again the original driver included with in the CD , and the FPS went again to a steady 60FPS everywhere . The conclusion is , I will NEVER again update any ATI driver

Another good place to get parts threw is www.pricewatch.com. They'll find you the lowest prices for what you're looking for. Lots of good bargains.

Yeah it is Jim. You could try using it by going to the retailers that give the best deals, as some mut ship to the UK too. Doesn't New Egg and TigerDirect ship to the UK?

Also this site..... http://www.superbiiz.com/

I've asked this before here at SubSim.... but can't remember exactly where.

Will SH5 run on an Intel P4 3.2E CPU, 6800XT 256mb GFX card or 7600 card, 3GB DDR Ram, and XP? I haven't installed SH5 yet and can't see any point on doing an install if this rig won't run it. I've put off building a new PC but it's coming to the time where it's due to be necessary I guess.

Thanks.

Processor should be fine but you should really be looking into a GTS 450 ($130) or GTX 460 ($240), even with my 1Gb 460 I still get the odd skip while looking around at alot of graphically intense things

Either that site is seriously lying or I can really seriously get a computer that would run SH5 no problem for like 500$. Not including Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, Monitor or OS but I have all of those already .. wow

Well, the GTX is out for now as my motherboard is AGP only... Asus P4P800E-Deluxe. I do have a Zotac GF 8800GT 1GB GDDR3 PCIe card tho, that will be used in my new pc build.

How do you rename the exe? Are you saying that my 5970 only ran sh5 on one chip?

Sober, how much you think I should underclock?
Sorry, was away a bit

Simply right click the file sh5.exe and rename it to FEAR.exe. Everything still works fine.....including the DRM. All this does is tell the driver to load the crossfire profile for the game Fear, which happens to work for a lot of games.

I'm not sure if this would be an issue on a dual chip card however. The drivers for my setup do have a small "flag" you can enable to ensure that both cards are being used. You may want to look at the CCC to see if you card's driver has something similar.

I did have some odd mouseview issues at times so I also tried out the antilag and it works like a dream

Guess no one knows? Or maybe I'm just invisible, I don't know. I understand I must sound foolish. Over the years I've spent my money on travel, study and the like...not thousands on a computer, that would be obsolete in a few years anyway. Just as my dad [a photographer] didn't bother with digital cameras until they passed the 6 megapixel mark...so now; a computer's [finally] looking genuinely interesting to me.
I'll try a different approach; what's the recommended system requirements for SHV...with an intel-chip [as everyone in this city seems to want to sell me intel stuff, plus all the sales seem to be intel based...and it also looks like the better chip, with hyper-threading/higher ranked benchmarks etc]. Will an i3 350 [laptop] chip be sufficient? If not...what if I double the recommended power of the graphics card, from 512-to 1gb? Or should I go for an i3 540-which outperforms the i5 720? It's pretty confusing.

Thanks.

To some extent it comes down to personal preference.

For example, I used to buy a lot of different makes of motherboards, but recently have been sticking with Asus. I'm sure others have different favourites for a variety of reasons.

If you are fortunate and money is no object, get the latest and the greatest. If you're like me and have a modest budget, get parts that are one "step" below the best. They'll give you 75-90% of the performance at half to 2/3 the price. If money is tight, you'll really have to do your research.

I'm not sure how experienced you are with PC hardware, but it's handy to become proficient at assembling and disassembling general PC architecture components if you aren't already. That way you can buy 1 or 2 upgrades a year for cheap, and never have to worry about your system going obsolete leading to thousands of dollars for a new one. It is not difficult; like lego or tinker toys but with fragile blocks. The manuals that come with motherboards offer a lot of instruction on assembly.

If you are not already familiar with these websites, Anandtech.com and Tom's Hardware are great places to not only read reviews on components (high end and budget), but they also have a lot of very helpful articles on how a lot of this stuff works. There are many more websites out there, but these will get you started anyway.

So while I can't directly answer your question with specific hardware recommendations, I can tell you from my experience running it on 2 fairly decent systems (i5 750 with 2x ati5870, and a core 2 duo with geforce 8800GTX, both with 4gigabytes of fast ddr3 RAM), you'll want to build the fastest system you can to run Silent Hunter 5 in all of its glory. Having said this, it looks great and is entirely playable with lower settings if you can't afford to build a monster machine.

Hope this helps

Hi. Thanks;0)

Money's an issue [as in, I have debts to clear first]; but between an i3-i5, is around the price bracket I'm looking at. Sounds like an i3-entry level even, will be sufficient...with an i3 540 being a true bargain, and more than capable of handling the game, system hog or not-esp if it has better than the recommended graphics card. Will some of the patches/mods increase the efficiency of the game I wonder? Anywho.
A computer's finally something that's become integral to growing my bussiness [I'm an artist, see-landscapes and portraits, oil]...so it's finally time to start looking. I expect to be debt free around March 2011 (although even then, a computer's still the second thing I need to invest in...a few thousand dollars worth of frames [sigh] has to come first).
Plus, console games...I think I might have outgrown them;0( I'd rather just read about u-boats, and build a couple of 1/350 ones-to embed in resin [like a scorpian]. Mwahaha. Or play some casual non-console ipod type games [i.e; old school shmups] or a u-boat sim.
I think I'm getting old.
