Default SH5 + patch + mods: is it worth it?

OK OK... don't chew me out for the title, this is a serious question:
I really want your advice on this.
I used to play SH3 + GWX and I loved it!
I'm not hardcore like some of you: I let my officers calculate firing solutions since I liked "locking" the periscope on a ship's "sweet spot" and let fly. I enjoyed the hunt more - sneaking up and then sneaking away, waiting out wasserbombs, sneaking into harbors, etc. I also liked the external camera very much and the spectacular views it offered (fine, consider me a cheat GWX guys). I don't have to have everything at full realism, but I do like eye-candy and decent AI, of course.

I read some awful things about SH5, and I really want to know if it's worth playing. It's not the money, it's the time, energy, and heartache I worry about.
So what I want to know is if the patches and mods do indeed fix SH5's shortcoming or not, and if yes, which mods do the job. I know there's a whole bunch of mods out there, but I really want the handful of those mods that really boost the game's visuals + fix its problems.
I guess what I'm looking for in SH5 is to be a greatly upgraded and improved version of SH3.

Thanks for your time and advice!

The short answer: Yes, IMHO

The long answer: The battle that is most likely about to ensue between the detractors and the fan boys will fill that in.

Either way, I really think you should just give it a try. Besides, once modders have been given enough time on SH5, it will be the premier submarine simulator.

Cool, and what mods (the ones that really matter) do you recommend?

I really like this list made up by AvM(just follow the link). I know it is pretty long, and may seem daunting, but he has everything color coded for importance. Just start with the more important stuff and work your way down as you feel comfortable with it. But, remember, your mod list should really follow your personal preference, so just use this list as a basic guide.

Eventually the modding community for SH5 will put everything together into a super mod I am sure, but that is a good ways away.

Hope this helps

From what i gather, the order you install the mods is also critical. Dont ask me which come first as im still waiting for my copy of SHV to be delivered. Maybe someone with experience can help out?

It's probably as worth it as it was a week or two ago when a thread asking the same thing was posted.

kaboom, and another one of those... Maybe there should be a sticked "buyers guide" in this forum... no, seriously!

Well, do what I would do: Read the posts in this forum, and make up your own mind. Whether it is worth it depends very much on you, and your expectations. Do you just look for a game to spent your time, do you look for an exhaustive experience that surpasses a supermodded SHIII immediatly, do you search for something that is as good as it is for now and has the potential to become the next supermodded SHIII, or ...? Does the online DRM scheme matter in your decision?

There is no simple answer to this, and everybody here will have his (or her) own views. There is plenty of threads, older threads, that you could browse. It's a lot, but worth it.

these threads got real old real fast a LONG time ago. stickies wont help, and thats pretty much a guarantee. over half the info is in all the sticky threads but yet its CONSTANTLY asked in threads.

and most likely if they're asking if its worth it then they MUST be reading all the negativity. people make it TEN TIMES WORSE then reality. about one third of the people who say it havent bought it yet. IT ISNT THAT BAD! i HONESTLY dnt know why people bash it. DRM is the only problem i have with SH5. and thats because i HAVE to be on the internet and i HAVE to save my game onto the internet. Thats why i DESPISE these threads. I swear some people are overlycritical. They ACTIVELY search for things wrong and then turn even the tiniest of glitches or problems into a god dam game breaker, and its pissing me off that people actually listen to them. THERES NOTHING GAME BREAKING ABOUT SH5.

Now, your new so i could understand why you posted this thread, and its perfectly alright that you did. dont take this too hard, im not giving you a beatdown because you did, but anyway, SH5 is perfectly fine. However, its entirely up to you. Just dont let all this negativity overwhelm you and make you hate SH5. You just needed info, and thats OK. but im not fond of this question, but trust me its ok that you did. Its not directed towards you.

CaptainMattJ, I want to thank you for your reply.
You are right - I was overwhelmed by people's negative reviews, and also from reviews from gamespot etc.
As I said, it wasn't the wasted money I feared, but getting bummed by the whole process of buying, installing, etc. and then realizing that the game is broken. If people really feel that the patches + mods fix most of the issues, then I'll be a happy (junior) kaleun.
BTW - is the manual that bad? I need to learn how to play the game, duh...

I concur with CaptainMattJ. After the two patches, and with judicious use of a whole library of free mods, SH5 is eminently playable. IMO, it is a great joy to play!

As for the manual: it is almost completely worthless. You'll need to learn how to manage the game and the boat by reading the applicable questions and answers on this marvelous forum.

Happy hunting!

hello orengreen!

While i was reading your post i've noticed that what you are looking for from the game is what i am looking for.we have very similar expectations from SH5.

can you send me a pm about the game after you install and play it for a while.that will be most helpful cause i have plans to buy it but i have concerns after reading all those critics.

thanks.
Can.
