Default 1st generation U-boat radar

I have just installed the first radar set on my VIIC; I forget the name but it is the first one offered. Do I have to manually operate this or will it run by default? I realize that it is limited in sweep to ahead of the boat and will later be replaced with better sets. Will the Allies be able to detect my radar emissions?

Thanks.

Fumo 29 had its limits, and could be seen if the enemy had mounted RWR

If you have a man in the radioshack just tell him to do a continuous sweep and he'll keep going until you dive or stop him. If you go under a wave, though (like 10 meters or so), he'll turn off the radar and leave it off until you tell him to switch it back on. Makes using the radar in high seas a bit of a drag

Also, merchants won't have radar detectors, but assume any escort you come across does. Late war it's pretty much guaranteed they'll know you're there if you use radar.

Haven't used it myself for a long time, but from what I remember, it is activated automatically when you surface. You need to go to sonar/radar menu and tell your man to switch it off.

If you don't, you're going to start being very popular with the RAF, from about 20km out of port onwards, as well as being target number 1 for any DD's in your vicinity.

(Yes, in terms of giving away your location, the emissions are pretty much the equivalent of having a neon sign on your bridge).

I don't bother equipping it, but that's just a personal choice.

The first radar had its limits, you had to steer the boat at any angle for optimal contact, and it was extremely sensitive to high waves, the next generation where you had 360 degrees which was much better, but the radar does not need to be on all the time, when there is a risk of revealing your position

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll pay more attention to the new radar next patrol.
