My guess is that those pictures are stored on the memory card, in case the camera is stolen.

If his camera was never stolen, then even if it is made for comedic purposes, one could call it an hoax.

Calling it a hoax implies that he said something which wasn't true. He merely states he put it on the memory case in case he lost it, which wouldn't necessitate the camera being lost or stolen to be true.
