Putin Vows Russia Will Launch Manned Space Missions in 2018

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia will launch its manned space missions from a new center in the Far East in 2018, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Saturday, as the country seeks greater independence for its space program.

Putin made the comments as he inaugurated the start of construction for the new cosmodrome at the former missile defense base of Vostochny, outside the town of Uglegorsk, 3,600 miles (5,800 kilometers) east of Moscow, and a few hundred miles away from China.

Russia currently uses the Soviet-built Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan for all of its manned space missions and other commercial launches as well as a smaller center in northern Russia for military satellite launches.

Kazakhstan will be peeved, there goes a lot of money and jobs. I can see why Russia wants it own place inside it's borders. Kazakhstan may be friendly, but it has been unstable.

Kazakhstan will blame Borat for it!

With NASA's current budget Ivan could buy them out and set up shop in Canaveral.

And don't forget that it's Vladimir ("Chuck Norris got nothing' on me!") Putin. He will undoubtedly be commanding the first mission.

Space Ranger Putin will no doubt shoot Mars with a giant space crossbow. The bolt will be attached to a cable woven from adamantium and the sinews and tendons of his enemies. This cable will allow him to tow the planet into Earth's gravitational field, where it will remain in orbit for easier access on future visits.

However he will not actually need the cable, as Mars will be captured by the sheer force of his overpowering charisma and come along quietly.

Does anybody else wish that Putin would run for President of America? I would so vote for him?

Infact I would vote for him to be president of America for the rest of his life.

Are you saying that Putin being struck by two moons would stop him. Please he would blast right through!

What a senseless waste of 2 perfectly servicable moons, though. I hear Russia has been wanting to stick it's flag into one of those for a while now...
