For those who's interests lean towards rum, buggery and the lash there are:
Captain Horatio Hornblower, RN with Gregory Peck; Damn the Defiant with Alec Guinness; and Billy Budd with Robert Taylor. All classic storys, beautifully filmed and totally lacking in CGI special effects. |

As for Mutiny on the Bounty, we have the 1935 version with Charles Laughton and Clark Gable, the horribly bad (IMHO) Brando film of 1962 and The Bounty with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. Some other versions of the story out there as well. |

I was always amused at the parts that they got right that they shouldn't have.

Which version?
1935 (Charles Laughton, Clark Gable): Good, but goes with the traditional 'Bligh-as-monster' scenario. 1962 (Trevor Howard, Marlon Brando): Very good, well worth seeing. 1984 (The Bounty)(Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson): My personal favorite. It makes Bligh a real person, and covers his epic 47-day 3600-mile (6700-km) voyage with 18 men in a 23-foot boat, navigating only with a sextant and a watch. It also covers his court-martial. Far and away the best, in my opinion. I admit I haven't seen the 1916 version.

I've seen all of 'em too. I did really like Anthony Hopkins as Bligh, and it was definitely a more even-handed portrayal. And having the extra part of the story included was nice since I was familiar with what happened afterwards.
I think I've only seen the Brando version once, liked it well enough as far as recall... and I do like Brando, although it wouldn't be my favorite work of his. But I have to say, it's really hard to top Clark Gable in the original. Because, you know, it's Clark Gable. *sigh* |
